So I am driving along and I smell fuel a really strong smell. I stopped and popped the hood and gas was pouring out of the carburetor so I shut it off and got the fire extinguisher out of the trunk just in case. Anyhow after letting what had spilled evaporate off I took the top off the carburetor expecting to find a stuck float or crud in the seat. What I found was all the rust from the gas tank was in the fuel bowl and what could not get past the needle was stuck in the supply pipe. The new filter I put on a month earlier had failed and all the junk it had trapped was now in the carburetor. So some cleaning and a bit of walking to the parts store to get a filter and I got it going and got it home. Guess I need to take the accelerator pump off and clean it out now.

I wish I could get a gas tank. I have been searching for a replacement tank for my 1967 Mercury comet voyager wagon but it seems they don’t exist.
FWIW you may hit lucky here. I needed a tank for a '62 Rambler- they don't exist. This site gives dimensions of every tank so I searched around and found one close in size and shape. In my case I bought a '52 Chevy tank, only minor mods and it works great. The quality of the tank, new sending unit and hardware is very good.
