Fuel filter not filling up.

HI ALL
I put a filter between the pump (stock pump) and the tank (next to the pump) and it don't fill up but there seams to be a lot of volume out of the pump to the carb. I know its not normal but do you think Its OK.. When I was first starting it up in the drive way I just used a gas can under the car and the filter would fill up then. the only change is its comming from the tank now... I replaced the only other rubber hose at the tank, the rest of the line is metal,, could it be the in the tank filter/screen? I sealed it up real nice and it don't leak now and I realy don't want to pull the sending unit.. but If I have to?? :(

Very possible. REMOVE the gas cap then blow some sompressed air back through the line.

Let all the air out of your air compressor so there is only 15 psi in it (don't use 100 psi to start with!)

You can go up from there.

Ok
thanks I'll try that My compresser has an adjustable regulitor on the out put side I'll cut the prusher maybe down to 10 or less just so I don't blow the screen off I hope.... I think I well also put some fuel system cleaner in it.,, do you think that well help clear it??

I have seen that also and wonderd about it. I just did the same thing on my stock 66 200 and there are times that there is bareley a dribble of fuel visable in the filter, but the engine seems to idle fine. I have put 300+ miles on since I installed the filter and my only problem is a bit of a stumble/vibration at idle. It will do 70mph all day long. My brother had a chev truck with a 350 and a giant holley dubble pumper on it with the clear filter mounted between the mechanical pump and the carb and it did the same thing for 5 years and 60,000 miles. All I can figure since its a larger spot in the line any air in the system gets trapped there and since we are dealing with 'open' systems (not EFI) it does not cause any problems.

you said the filter was between the pump and tank? most inline fule filters I see are between the pump and carb, but if your getting enough fule to the engine throughout the rpm range i wouldnt worry about it.

If I read correctly, your car runs fine but you don't see any fuel in the filter? That's perfectly normal, sometimes there'll be a lot in there and sometimes not, I don't think there's any rhyme or reason for it.

Filter between the tank and pump? I think that's a good place for an inline filter, since it's not pressurized you don't have to worry so much about leaks, and you can run a steel line all the way to the carb.

I had to run a fuel filter between the tank and pump on my F-250 to catch all the rust.

I changed it every week for two months before it would stop plugging up!

Yep, done that before on my 72 Sport Custom.

OK Yes thats why I did it to keep any rust out of the pump as well as the carb.. I feel bette not that some say its sorta of normal... Makes sence about the air in the system and it not being under pursher...
Thanks

The filter between the tank and pump will never appear to be filled. The pump will only suck fuel thru it as needed and it will never look full. that's normal.

Keep an eye on it for dirt and crap.

i had one tank I got somewhere that looked like it had a disolved paper bag in it. If it wasnt for myt inline filter before the fuel pump, I probably would have had major problems. I had to run tank almost dry to get it all out and it still had a little next couple of tanks

inline SEE THRU fuel filter is a neccessity IMP

If someone loses a gas gas and uses a rag instead, you will find all kinds of interesting stuff in those fuel tanks. I found a couple of gym socks in one!

Don't get me started about aircraft fuel tanks.....
we have found baseball caps, coveralls, tennis shoes, rivet guns, bucking bars, lunch boxes, sealant guns, etc. etc. etc.....you name it!
