All Small Six Fuel pump fitment issue

This relates to all small sixes

Beginner question for everyone:
I've posted elsewhere on here about how I'm rebuilding a 144. Well, I had dual action fuel pump (pictured):

And while disassembling it to clean it I found some crushed up springs and valves inside of it and figured it was time to rebuild it. Rebuild kits were more expensive than just buying replacements, so I bought this fuel pump off ebay:

Obviously slightly different (and single action, figure that's fine because i don't care about vacuum wipers), but seems like it should fit.

Well, the 'lever' doesn't seem to move as much as the old one (if that makes sense) and so even when I pretty firmly push it down, the fuel pump cant get close enough to the engine to bolt on (pictured, obviously there'll be a gasket eventually)

Can the lever travel be adjusted? Do I need a spacer or something? Am I doing something wrong? Did I buy a dud?
Any help would be appreciated

Lol nevermind. Ignore me. I just needed to be willing to push a little harder. Was too afraid of breaking it. Fits great

Good deal! I was going to say, 1) be sure the actuation lever matches the original lever. 2) Be sure the lever is under the cam lobe (although on that one it's hard to get it wrong. )
The crushed springs are why the other one was easy to push. And wouldn't operate properly. They are stiff. I assume you used oil or grease on the lever when installing.
PS- that's a good original quality USA pump. (y)

It might be a good situation to take the springs/ diaphragm off the new and put on the old one🤔
I would hand on to the old one too!👍

Yea once I gave it a bit more of a shove and heard a reassuring suction/pump noise I realized what was going on. Bolted right up!

I'll definitely hang onto the original. Possibly rebuild it someday too.

Next time check to see where is lobe is. if it is in the pump position, rotate the engine so the lobe is away from the lever. It will be easier to install the pump.
