On the '66, where does the negative side of the battery attach? I read that someone said it attached directly to the engine, is this correct? If so, where? If not, then where?

Thanks in advance for the help...

Thanks, that might solve my smoking distributor problem also....

I have my battery mounted in the trunk and grounded to the frame... as long as the engine is also well grounded to the frame that should work fine too

some rigs (like my truck) came with a ground to both the frame and the engine. all that matters is having a heavy ground to work with the starter and enough of a ground to the body to make everything there work

I was exploring on my 66 stang over the weekend and there appears to be a ground wire in the harness that goes to the alternator that goes to a bolt in the block down by the alt. Also looks to be a ground or two to the back passenger side corner of the block. I didnt look to see where the other end of those go but that explains why things seemd to work without the big strap or cable I was expecting to see. My battery does go to a bolt on the corner of the head.

I grounded my engine to the frame, but actually have my battery grounded to my alternator. Bad? It's been that way for nearly three years.

The battery should be grounded to the block. The starter needs the most juice to operate, and by grounding the battery to the block you are making sure that best path is maintained.

I bought an old GMC truck a few years back for $50. The seller stated it wouldn't start, even with a new battery. My brother and I noticed that the battey was grounded to the body, and not the block. We paid the $50, switched the ground wire in the sellers driveway and she fired right up. You should have seen the look on his face. And OBTW, never had another problem with getting the starter to turn over.

There is a grounding strap to the firewall as well, but the heavy main ground goes to a bolt on the battery side of the block.

On the Fairmont, there is one cable that goes from the battery to the block, but it has a fitting in the middle that is attached to the body. And there is also a ground from the back of the block to the firewall.

There's a stud sticking up out of the head, right near the thermostat housing on the battery side of the head. There's also a grounding strap to the firewall, that bolts to the starter. It goes to the same bolt that you bolt the transmission dipstick to on the starter, the top left bolt. Hope that helps. I might've repeated someone else, though....
