hey guys,
it seems my car doesnt want to cooperate and is starting to cost more and more!!

this time,
how hard is it to change my harmaonic ballancer??? does my radiator need removing or can i get to it by removing the shroud and the fan???

it is wobbling about the place pretty badly, and started rattling the motor at idle. guys at work warned me this will eventually damage the crank nose, and bend it too.?? how urgantly should i be replacing this???

cheers

As a temp measure, steal another four bolt balancer off another XF Falcon or XG Falcon ute. Yes, I'd remove the radiator, and get a clear run. The radiator bolts should be replaced with M8 allen bolts coated with magnalube if they are rusted on already. Meantime, take it real easy, and relax. Plan to get a better one later when you have some time off. They are expensive. Spend no big bikkies now!

It's a simple job to do. My guess is you may not need a 3 pin puller, but they can be rented if needs be. Talk to Backlash or Aussie7Mains, addo, or even Mustang Six. The pulleys for the alternator, air con, power steering, water pump are all linked to the balancer. Remove that radiator, grab some fluids for yourself, and have a go.

The financials are a Falcon thing. We all find working on an older car kills the wallet, but its an XF its the coolest thing around, and with the best parts backup ever....1300 odd people rootin' for ya from FordSix.Com!

Matt , we got them at work here in NZ and there fairly cheap.Depending on what style you want..
A stock replacement goes for $80.00 + gst retail in NZ
A street flash on egoes at $200.00 +gst retail NZ
a race one goes for $300.00 + gst retail NZ
these prices are retail and i dont think the company has ever sold one retail ,but still sell plenty to the trade (a lot cheaper..A LOT).
Running a dodgy balancer can root your Main bearings (normally the front one).Get the radiator out of the way it will make for a easier job...in fact i dont think you could do it with the radiator in place ..

cheers Dave

you can pick up new balancers for about 40bux down here in melbourne i got one solved my belt throwing problem and better than getting another stuffed one from the wreckers

Ross in Sydney do an exchange rebuild in a few grades, all using urethane based polymers not rubber. Either $125 or $225 (got CRS today)...

Adam.

p.s. The puller is $17 usually.

hmmmmm, i think ill do it my self, doesnt sound too hard....

i rang veales here in perth, and with my discount thru work a new ballancer is only $27...... i might even be able to get it cheaper from covs or another place, work gets a 70% discount!!!!!!!!
how come some of the ones you guys mention are so much more???
dave, whats the difference between all the flash ones u mentioned?? whats a "better" (more expensive) one gonna do?

so theres no precisions involved??? i dont need to line things up? and all that?... just pull the old one of and chuck the new one on?? please tell me its as simple as that lol haha.

looks like im busy again this weekend! hahah
cheers

p.s. ive now learnt if you dont want to cry never add up how much your car has cost you!!!!!!!!! eeeep

I believe in getting the best balancer money can buy, Matt. I just don't want to pay for it!

Although sixes are generally smooth engines, the 4.1 doesn't have a fully counterweighed crank, and sufferes from vibrations because its not forged steel. If the main and crank bearings were bigger, there wouldn't be an issue, because the weight dulls the vibrations out. But if its going to get a flogging, I'd grab a good balancer. At the very least, a stand in to make it a runner. I've seen first hand what a nerked neoprene bush can do. After my mates 308 shot out an outer, it looked like Captain Scarlet meats the Mysterons...it took the raditor, hoses, belts out! Take any Falcon 4.1 for a fast blatt, and stop, and feel the balancer. They get hot as because they take all the vibes out of the engine, and disapate a lot of it as heat. Why do you think the rubbers perish? If you were getting jiggled at even 3500 rpm, you'd get a little steamed, eh?

It's like the diff, good three core radiator, trans, efi, headers all the gun gear...they make you poor, but its good stuff, and simple. If we could only HP the go-fast gear like we can audio and mags

as a quick question, how much coolant does my radiator hold??
at least i can buy enough first time round

cheers

Allright you asked for it ,stand by for a product blurb.......
We sell POWERBOND harmonic balancers here in NZ..
First up there a stock replacement run of the mill nothing flash which are cheap and good for a daily driver...
Then theres is the STREET SERIES ...These feature bonded dampening
rubber to eliminate spinning and component seperation. They also have a SG iron balancer centre and new inertia rings, bonded then balanced to
extremely tight tolerances....good for upto 6500 rpm and have etched timing marks........if your at 6500 rpm i dont think youll be woring about the balancer.
The STREET RACE SERIES ....These have similar features to Street series
but have CNC machined interia rings from 4130 steel for safety and will comply with the ANDRA drag racing requirements.Good for upto 7500rpm.....Again if your at 7500rpm it wont be for long and you will be buying more than a balancer....
As for the rest of the info ..what Xecute said.

Matt
I your in perth I can help you, Ive got the pullers you need and a balancer you can have for a few bills, get intouch If I can help

-matt-

ok no problem anymore, after much blood loss and many cut and grazed nuckles and fingers, i have gotten the fan off!! im embarresed to say it took nearly half a day to remove the radiator and other stuff and then get the fan off!... tomorrow i will actually replace the ballencer!! meanwhile im off to get drunk and relieve all todays stress!

hey again,
the new ballancer is slightly different, i dont know if these things will make any difference, but i wanted to know. also with the new one, i cannot fit the pulley for the aircon belt.... it requires a 3 hole, but the new one is 4. (the belt wasnt connected in the first place) and the design is slightly different. and if i cant bolt the other pulley on theres no way im able to bolt the ballancer the the crank either!! will any of these things make a differnece?? all the main dimensions seem to be the same, its just small differnces.
just have a look and tell me what you think.

also theres a series of small 'holes' on the back of the old one but not on the new one, its marked in one of the pics.

cheers lads

My st**f up? @%4%^!!!!

Sorry
.

Drink the bottle dry...there are two types, late and early. Early is the 3 bolter, late is the four bolter. Dang.

woohoo!!
no need to worry anymore! its all done and working! (for now)
cheers for all your help guys!
it wasnt so hard after all.. woulda been done alot quicker if i had all the tools at hand!. left em all at work!

-matt-

The odd 3 bolter I've seen can develop cracks along the three cast legs of the auxilary power steering pulley. Ford must have done this as a service upgrade.

Well done, hope you have a few dollars left.

hmm, ive had my harmonic balancer replaced with only having to take out the fan and cover, but it must have been a real bitch. Yeh, you need a good run , without the radiator there (i hear).
