Headers on a 200ci...how much difference?

I am buying Clifford dual outlet headers. I am curious what kind of difference it will make. My exaust currently is as follows...
stock manifold
2.5 inch pipe, Y, dual pipes, dual glasspacks, tips.

so i'm gonna go with TRUE 2.5 inch dual exhausts with glasspacks.

anyone got any experience how much the headers will help? any numbers by chance, or at least driving experience. the motor is stock except for the pertronix conversion...

Almost no power gain is my personal experience. Slightly quieter idle, slight increase in economy. Your free-flowing system with the dual pipes may make the sound "fatter".

Admittedly, it was never able to be tested at WOT conditions because of our road rules.

Road rules. Humph! That's why I drive on the sidewalk.

You will not see a huge gain, because the log / carb combo still restricts. I think you would see more if the log flowed better. I would expect a carb and header upgrade would gain more than the two seperate mods added together. Of course then you will see a benefit from a dizzy upgrade.

A good plan would be to lay out a good combo on paper, and work towards that goal. Try to keep the target in focus.

ahh. makes since. what goes in must come out, no more, no less...

i AM sick of the exhaust doughnut burning inself to crisp and leakin every 2 weeks or so...

the header flanges should help THAT problem. :)

When I put dual outlet long tube headers on my 250 cid Maverick I picked up 3 tenths in my 1/4 mile times, which I thought was pretty good. Was not expecting that much of an improvement. I was, however, running a single exhaust with a turbo muffler prior to the headers.

Well, DAVID says they help when you open up the intake. But both parts have to be flowing. It doesn't help to just have the exhaust opened. On the other hand, I do believe that the header did add something to my engine performance. That and the new Pony Carbs 1100 on top of the rebuilt long block replacing the 175,000 mile original plant.

I installed a FSPP dual outlet header with 2.5" duals all the way back. I felt an increase in power over the stock exhaust even with a single barrel carburetor. I could tell it was much less restricted and it seemed to pick up faster. However, I quickly installed a 2bbl carburetor and it really picked up at WOT. If I had to change one thing I might have gone with a smaller diameter exhaust, maybe 2.25" or 2". What are everyone's thoughts on this? Is 2.5" too big for a mildly modded six? Or does one have to buy a few more performance parts to make up for the extra space?

8) headers will generally show an increase of about 10-15hp, and a good exhaust system will add another 5-10 depending on how bad the original equipment was. our little sixes have a generally poor exhaust manifold so adding headers will show a decent increase in power. the best part though is the fatter torque curve.

ive never had an engine where headers alone added any power to it. it may sound faster but on most stock engines its not going to do much. now slide a cam and bigger valves etc. you might have something. it doesnt matter how well your engine can breathe out if it cant breath in you wont go any faster

Like Gene said, You'll pick up about 3/10 in the qtr, plus you will get the most instant gratification out of a header/exhaust swap because it will sound a whole lot better! :D :D

Ya gotta start somewhere......

Ludwig, .... you said "IT ADDS AS MUCH , IF NOT MORE THAN A REAL GOOD PERFORMANCE STICKER"! Where can I get these "real good performance stickers" in order to make my wheels go faster???? Jim

There was a whole string about them a couple years ago. I'm thinking Moon-eyes, Headman headers, Isky, you know. But hey, if they were just off the shelf, this hobby wouldn't be half the fun.

I've got a mainly stock 200 in my 68 mustang. the Petronix Ignitor and coil made a world of difference in smoothing out my engine but adding the Clifford dual outlet header with 2" pipes made a HUGE difference. Not only does it sound nice and throaty but I saw a huge difference in response. I drive the flat freeways around Dallas/Ft Worth and I am usually around 75-85 mph ....just so I dont get run over...and have no problem gettting to 100. Before the header I was lucky to hit 95 and getting up to speed to merge was a frightening experience at times. I have a Webber to stick on there but the linkage will take some modification to get right. I am all for the Clifford header but make sure you get someone to install an exhaust that fits the car. My guy is an old hot rodder who runs an exhaust shop. His opinion was that on that motor 2" was a very good fit. Has a nice low rumble at idle...more bark than bite but mines a crusier...not a hot rod.

What muffler are you running? That is exactly the setup I want except I have a single outlet.

had mine done a couple years ago...wish I could remember.

10 minutes later... checked my info..and my guys website. he uses flowmasters.

I just added long tube headers into flowmaster 40's today on my 67 mustang with a 200 inline 6. There is no question I gained quite a bit of torque and hp. Enough so as I'm questioning whether to keep my drum breaks, which are brand new and stopped the car with no problem before adding the headers and true duel exhaust. I really didn't think i would gain much if anymore power but I was 100% wrong. I totally agree with the comment someone made in this post that the stock exaust system that these cars come with are truly terrible, I think that plays into the gains I noticed in my car.
