Clean the engine meticulously first. Got your new parts?
You need a cam change gasket set (if pulling the head off), timing chain or timing set, lifters, cam lube, balancer puller, torque wench, timing light, maybe a new gear for the dizzy, usual sockets, screwdrivers, combination spanners. Got all that lot together?
Then you'll need the radiator out of the way, A/C condenser if fitted, all belts off and ancillaries removed. Loosen the motor and tranny mounts. Once you've pulled all the bits off barring the old cam, it's time to check the angle of the dangle. Eyeball the centre of the cam gear to see if it will pass through the space you have cleared by removing the radiator. You may need to jack up (and secure) the motor or tranny to give this a "clear shot".
Lube up the new cam and proceed as usual. As a final thing, drip some light engine oil into the top of the distributor (the felt under the rotor button). This will help your advance mechanism stay functional - they are now getting very sticky with age.
Is this the kind of info you wanted?
