I have a 64 ranchero with a 200, c4 and cliffy single out headers. I can't get the starter out from between the block and headers  . Please tell me I don't have to remove my headers I just put them back on three days ago  . The starter gear is not thrusting out can this be fixed with the starter in place.

I did it, I removed the starter with out loosening one single header bolt. It required a little work but less than taking the header off. all I did was hook a winch to the collector and pulled it half an inch tword the passenger finder. With a little finness it came right out  .

I am never that lucky. Fer instance, last week I changed oil in the Jag and dropped the oil cap into a hole between intake runners right on top of the starter. Took three of us over an hour to fish it out again..... :?

Yep, I have mouse holes in my concrete shed floor that numerous spring clips and bearings have disappeared into, when dropped. Most frustrating loss was the $30 "wadding" needle seal for an Iwata spray gun. Compressed waxy cotton; about 1/8" diameter - gone. :? I suspect the meece have now eaten it.

Speaking of starter/header clearance issues; I went to get a new starter for my 200 as I was planning on installing a header (not going to happen now as they're outta stock) and did not want to deal with a starter going bad once the header was on. I ordered a starter for a 200, and it was noticeably bigger than the original starter from my former 170/3 speed combo. Turns out that the 170 starter is about one inch shorter, and about 1/2 - 3/4 in smaller in diameter.

I ordered one for a 170 instead so I have a little more clearance when I eventually get the header. I don't know exactly where it is that the clifford s/o header hit's the starter, but maybe that little size differance will eliminate the problem. The 170 starter seems to turn over my 200 with no problems at all.

I have the big starter and the headers don't hit it. But I had a problem with the header hitting the fender and had to shim the motor mount 1/8. It was very difficult getting the starter back in though. I was able to push it most of the way in but finish it off with the floor jack. It took me about an hour and many harsh words to get it back in.

yeah i drop stuff while working on the cars and i have no carport or garage so it just hit the dirt and you have to search for it. i have lost so many float needles by dropping them in the dirt. most of the time i search for about an hour, to no avail, buy a new one and find the old one the next time im under the car. it really agrivates me.

I work on my car over the grass so the greasy dirt matter doesn't get mooshed into the concrete and other stuff falls down there too. Drag a magnet around, underneath the car and outside the perimeter. It doesn't get everything. Sometimes it doesn't get anything. But every once in a while you pick up some really wierd stuff.
Generally I subscribe to the BFH school of minor adjustments, but I prefer pressure and leverage when working on my car, much like sleeper. But with much less success.
