Help

I have an oil leak again from the rear of my 200, its not the rocker cover/oil pan or rear main seal, we have determined by the evidence that there must be an plug or oil gallery behind the motor, it leaked majorly on the weekend when i raced my wagon, sprayed all under the car, 3 sets of eyes looked at it today on the hoist, only run or tell tale sign was a run on the starter motor side of the flywheel, nothing else on face of flywheel or anywhere else. Can anyone tell me whats behind the flywheel that may be causing this leak, i cant find my engine manual. other issue is my fresh liquid gold i put in last Thursday is now black, i did an oil change and put Penrite in. When i drove it the just over 1 hour drive to the track the engine got quite warm (not boiling) oil was quite hot, motor has 500 miles on it since doing a rear main seal and head gasket change.

I'm on to you, I know get it. Help LOL. Help. Each post has a pattern.

Those two plugs at the back need to be pulled with the right tool and a very long bar. Then resealed with Gyptol. I'm with Jack. If you've done the rest, then taht will be the problem. My 200 is just fine after a rebuild. You can go to a thicker oil, or, if you must, you can rerope seal it, but it'll be a full rebuild then. Make sure your not using the modern thin grade oils, the thin stuff flows like tracer dye, and the engine is designed and clearanced for just the 20/40 multigrade can do best with Shell Rotella T Diesel 15w-40 instead.

There's also a core plug at the back of the cam. If that fell out, leaks galore when you fire up the engine.

:hmmm: In this picture showing the back of the block that "CouprBoy" posted you can see there are not that many places for a 200 or 250 to leak from. These are oil galley plug, the cams soft plug, the 6 flywheel to crankshaft bolt holes, the rear main seal, and the pan gasket. Good luck

Thanks guys, i can see a trend here, i have missed due to one reason or anther very simple things i could have fixed had i known about them when the motor was out. I could have done my gear box seal when the motor was out, just didn’t know it was leaking, until we found out how little gearbox oil it had once filled. DOH!!

looks like i will be pulling the box out again, whats a more permanent fix to this problem? Drill and tap and screw a solid plug in or just use the factory type plug and silicone, metal mend or similar, friend of mine had to do the same thing, a new build, he didn’t put the plug in at all, all while trying to run a big solid cam in. The little things are the most annoying.....

It's a process and you learn and gain experience as you go.
Sometimes the hard way.... :stick:

I doubt anyone here has had to tap a plug in there.
As long as the job is done right it should work properly.

:hmmm: Which plugs? As far as the oil galley plugs in the back of the block they are a pipe thread so hardest part is to remove the old plug no drilling or tap required. Then install a new pipe plug with some sealer on it to seal the threads. Teflon pipe dope, Permatex, Aviation Gasket sealer, Anit Seze, and many more will work. For a Cam soft plug the Aviation Gasket sealer works well. Good luck
