If I'm reading you right, your concern with opening up your existing adapter is that you'll have to notch the bolt holes so much that you'll lost clamping ability, is that right? If so, as long as you had at least half the bolt head on top of the flange, I wouldn't worry much about it - there's not much strain on them, and it doesn't take much tightening to seal.
That's alright, but I appreciate the link. I like how it is oriented correctly so the linkage will work.
