Hello, had a carb question. there is a loud hissing coming from the hole atop the chamber that houses the float. Any idea if this is normal or what it means? When i put my finger over the hole it quiets down quite a bit.

Also, was wondering what it means when you step on the gas and there is a half second or so delay before the engine revs up. Could it be a carb problem? Jsut rebuilt the holley. Thanks!

How did the carb work prior to the rebuild?

It's defiantly not operating right, is the engine in good condition i.e. tuned right, good compression, etc?

I would say you would need to take it back apart and check it out again. Check the float type and if its heavy. Check that the float level is correct. Check the SCV. Check the gaskets are sealing no vacuum leaks etc. check that all the internal passages are clean by blow air through them, and check the throttle blade position and the shaft for excessive wear or slop.

It means it runs a lot better than mine!

You got some good suggestions already but it "could" be something as simple as your accelerator pump shot. With engine OFF, pump the throttle and see that you have a nice stream of fuel coming from the discharge nozzel. If not, proceed with measures outlined above (disassembly).

On the hissing thing...you have a HOLE in the top of your float bowl? Please describe where the hole is. It could be a vacuum leak and it "could" be at that little plate held down by three screws. That houses a vacuum actuated, spring loaded arm, that pushes on the economizer valve when the engine is under a heavy load...at least thats how I understand it  . Anyhow, you might have a vacuum leak there. Check for a good gasket and tight screws.

Good luck! Post back your findings!

I have three different Holley 1904 carbs over here. None of mine have a HOLE on the top of the float chamber. There is an air passage tube from the float chamber to the top of the carb throat that allows the float chamber to suck and purge air as the fuel level in the float chamber fluctuates. So there would be no need for a hole.
There is a hole at the back of the power valve cover mounted on top of the float chamber with 3 screws.
This opening allows a small amount of air passage for proper operation of the valve diaphragm.
There should never be a whistling noise.
It sounds to me like the power valve may be installed incorrectly possibly causing your hesitation problem and maybe the whistling noise also
