Just got the H/W setup goin and it runs great at idle, i can sit there and rev it and it is great but once i get going it doesnt want to go. Through first and second it will get to about 2000 rpms and then jerk back and forth without any acceleration. First only gets me to about 10 mph and then second to about 25 mph. Third smooths out but has no acceleration. I have everything hooked up right. I suspected something with the vaccum and rehooked that up with better line, the vaccum port on the carb is just above the mixture adjustment screw. (right?) I need some serious solutions b/c this is my daily driver and i need it back soon. Thankful for any help.

Thanks,
Chris

yea its the load-o-matic but i had a guy look at it and he said that the vaccum lines should hook up and run. why doesnt it work this way with the 5200. so i would need to change to the 68 dizzy with dual advance. which would mean buying new pertronix unit also. too much money i dont have

I may be wrong but I think the problem lies with the amount ofvaccum. The big port on the H\W is not metered and the others wouldn't be the right amount either. Maybe someone else here could tell you for sure but it seems to me that the distributor is being held to whatever advance you intially set it to. Anyone else want to try?

It sounds like it could be way too lean. Check to make sure the main jet passage isn't clogged or that the main jet isn't way too small. Or you could have a bad vacuum leak. Spray carb cleaner around wherever you want to test for leaks and if the engine revs, you have a leak there. Also, while it is parked rev the engine and keep it reved up. If the engine revs but then sputters and won't stay reved up, you're probably running lean or have a vacuum leak.

what would be the right size jet to have in it for our sixes?

i had the same problem once, my car idled fine but once i got rolling my rpms revd a bit higher than normal and between first and third gear i couldnt go any faster than about 30-40 km/h (im canadian) and once i hit third gear would take forever to get to any speed, i asked around and people told me to check my hoses and all that, some even suggested i change my carb, but no i wouldnt do that because i knew they were fine. i remembered a teacher at school (when i went) saying that they had a problem like that and it was the catalytic converter, so i went and hacked off my cat and wammo i got my power back, plus a lot of noise which i remedied later with a glasspack, some pipes and tin cans.

if you have a cat. then i suggest that after u check the hoses and are getting frustrated that u take off the cat. It might be the solution

Swap the distributor for a DuraSpark 2 from 78 or later 200 or 250, you will glad you did. these are cheap at the junck yards. Rusell

Sounds like the main fuel delivery circuit and power enrichment circuits are not working. Once you go past roughly 1/4 throttle, the idle circuit can't deliver enough fule to support the airflow, so the car falls flat on its face. Could be caused by dirt, might be a rebuild issue. Before swapping jets, I'd open it up to make sure it is clean.

The Load-O-Matic is not ideal for that carb, but it will work. Consider how many there are out there that function well enough even with inoperative diaphragms. Check your base timing to make sure that is spot on.

Well i think im gonna shell out the $$ and replace the dizzy and pertronix unit, if that doesnt solve it then its going into the shop to get looked at. The carb should be clean as i bought it from Stovebolt already rebuilt. everything else seems to check out, timing is good, all hoses are new. Now it just needs to run, lol

Well, I recently got in my 68' dual advance dizzy and hooked everything up. it runs almost perfect on the road now seeing as i have the centrifugal advance and vac advance working for me now. Still a little bit of the shaking back and forth under full acceleration, working on timing it better with the air/fuel mix right. But other than that this is the best it has run since I bought it. Also, with the pertronix ignitor II, it was a direct swap in the the dizzy, no problems what so ever. When you buy it, it only comes as 65-73 w/o smog pump or w/ smog pump, so it switched in fine. Thanks for all the help from out there.

Let me know this turns out, I just bought one and am waiting for a warm day. Is a 67 only vaccuum advance too?

Raven - have you noticed a power increase, does it feel any different?

Finally after 2 inches of snow on Friday night in AUSTIN, TEXAS it's warmed back up and ive been able to give it some go time out on the road. To report back, I'm loving it, it is running the best it has since I bought it and yes there is definitely a power increase and im also waiting for my next fill up to rough calculate fuel mileage. So far it has been reacting very nice and you can definetly feel it when the second barrel opens up when your down on the throttle. It feels great like you get pulled lower to the ground and sucked back in the seat a little more. The acceleration is great in the top end for me. This has been a very good upgrade for me. Enjoy it if you do it.

Next Plans: Monroe shocks all around in ~ 2 weeks, Future T-5 upgrade and 3.20 rear end, < advice or expertise in these latter two appreciated.
