Hooker headers and throttle linkage interference

I've got my newly rebuilt 200 in my '65 Mustang and I'm hooking up the throttle linkage and fitting the headers. I'm running a Stovebolt 5200 carb on a 250 head that I modified to mount the carb with the fuel bowl facing forward, without an adapter. I got a bellcrank from Stovebolt to change the stock linkage from a vertical motion to a horizontal motion.

My problem is that it looks like the Hooker headers will interfere with the stock linkage arm. Am I missing something obvious? I might be able to bend the rod (a lot) to make it fit, but I'm surprised that it would interfere with the stock setup.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi SixPacker,

This is not uncommon. Same problem occures with Clifford headers. While I am not familiar with the Hooker the arm usually needs to be bent quite a bit, say 30*, for the Cliffy. You may need to adjust (bend) it at the pedal end also. A better way to do this is to take the arm out of the car, cut the shaft at a point between the hinge points on the firewall, use a piece of tubing as a connector (good tight fit), rotate the carb end up so that the pedal will be in the correct position then pin. epoxy, JB Weld the joint and bend the throttle end of the arm around a piece of pipe etc to get a proper radius. Also wouldn't hurt to heat the area a little B4 you bend it.

Hope this makes since. Hard to pit this into words. A forum member, 66200I6 (Ric Tucker), had a great post on this subject, with pictures, B4 the crash. If you contact him direct he may be able to send you the pics.

Enjoy the trip - Steve

Check out my page http://www.albertpenello.com/mustang and you'll see some pictures.

You have to bend the HECK out of the rod to make it fit!. You should think about scribing marks where you need to bend, and actually remove the rod from the car and bend on a vice. Expect to spend an hour + fitting and re-testing. You can fine-tune bend when once back on the car.

Good luck!

Darned good point about marking it, Mr Penello.

It may even be possible to bend a "mock-up" out of clothes hanger wire, and then reshape the original to match. I have seen these arms broken from excessive cold bending - heat is advised.

I didn't know hooker madea header for the 200 six. How does it look compared to Cliffors as far as quality, fit , price etc.?

Ughh. This wasn't in my schedule. Guess I should read those instructions!

Thanks for the pictures, and the coat hanger sounds like a good idea too. How much heat is good for bending? I have a torch for propane or MAP gas. Do I need to get it red hot or what?

As far as quality, I've never seen the Clifford, but the Hooker looks very nice - clean welds and nice coating. This is probably because they are only offered in the top of the line Super Competition version. Fit, of course is TBD. After I bought them I read a post that they can ride a bit low to the ground.

I've been trying to forget the price, but I think it was $360 + $120 for the ceramic coating. From Summit. Ouch!

Hey Albert nice website-

SixPacker, these are the pic’s that Steve was talking about. I am trying for the first time to post them directly in the string with a link. I hope it works. If not they should show up if you use the url. Here go's.

P9090006 is the final result

P9090010 shows one end of the tube and rod assembly with as small a tack weld I could muster to put the assembly back together. Be sure you have enough rotation to get the pedal off the floor. I had to grind and disassemble at least once to correct.

P9090018 I tried to get as level as possible to show where the final position of the bend will get you in relation to the head. This will give you an indication of how much the rod needs to be bent. For the Clifford header you need to start the bend approx 5.5 to 6 inches back.

If your interested in this procedure for your mod shoot me an emil. I will write you a procedure taking into account the experiences from my install.

Good luck, Ric.

Could some please let me know what I am doing wrong to get the pics to show up in the post? I have tried this before with out luck.

The last post shows just the links with the img tags.

Thanks in advance, Ric.
