How much should I pay?

I have a guy who just modded his old I6 (200) Mustang to all that V8 stuff

At first he wouldn't sell any of the old stuff, but now he has changed his mind, and has said he would sell the engine, tranny, a lot of the suspension stuff, and the rear end.

I am interested in all of it, but the engine and tranny is what I'm looking at right now. It was rebuilt about 7-8 years ago, but never used. (Or actually, it was turned over a couple months ago, adjusted & tuned, then pulled). How much should I pay for it? I'm hoping it is still in good shape from the rebuild, but no guarantee.

Thanks

Normally a few hundred would be all. If he's got receipts for stuff like hypereutectic pistons or torque plate honing, then somewhat more.

I'd treat the block as a $50 core unless demonstrably otherwise, and the head as a parts-store rebuilt. Trans at core value only, but make sure you get any/all attachments for stuff.

I bought a rebuilt 200 short block that had about 50 miles on it when the guy decided to swap to a V8 for 50 bucks.

I might have gone has high as 100....

200 to 300 tops. IF it is really as good as he says. You can get these parts pretty easy, as everyone and their brother ruins a good I6 by yanking it out and putting in a v8.

If you're the only guy that wants it, and his other option is the scrapyard, I'd hold out.
It might be worth $200-$300 to one of us, but in the real world, how high will the demand be for this guy's motor?
I'd offer him $50-$75 to remove it off his property for him!

All good opinions - I was thinking like 250 tops, so that is cool...

Problem is, this guy is an owner of a huge company, so I hope he doesn't think he can sell it for a ton...
