Ok, I had a guy that gave me what HE thought was a 300 I-6 motor. It isn't. It is a small-block 6 but I cannot figure out which one. The vehicle I got it out of was a Military Kyzar jeep. No that was not the stock engine...... some poor sap stuck it in there with an auto tranny and the small-6 had a helluva time pulling around that 5000 pound monster.

I have the complete engine (minus the starter) with the tranny.

My question is how can I tell what engine it is without diving off in it. If it is the 3.3L 200 I would like to put it in my 86 mustang in place of the 2.3L that is there now.

Any help?

Howdy Kam:

Look your engine over for a casting number and report them here for more details. It's located behind the carb on the top of the intake log and on the block under the exhaust manifold. While casting numbers frequently overlap engine sizes, that, along with other clues help to identify.

In general, 144 and 170s have three frost plugs on the passenger side of the block, under the exhaust manifold. 200/250s have 5 frost plugs. It used to be that the only engines that had the starter located below the oil pan line were the 250s, but some late model 200s ( after '78) also have the low starter position. So look at the water pump. 200s use three bolts to attach the water pump, 250s use 4 bolts.

3.3 sixes were used in Fox bodied Mustangs for at least three years, from 1980 to 1982, so adapting to an '86 should be relatively, easily done.

Well I don't have the engine here at my house....(it is at my friends house cause my wife said no more toys here till I get rid of some :( ). I do remember that the starter was mounted pretty high as opposed to my low mount on my 300. I will look at it the next time I am over there.

Ok, here is the info I can get off the engine.....

Numbers on the block are:
OG31
D8BE
6015-GE

It has 5 feeeze plugs and 3 bolts holding the water pump on.

This help?

what all can be done to mod this engine? I would like to play with it possibly............. Is there anything special about this engine? maybe I will keep my 86 stang and replace the 2.3 in it with this.......... but maybe I just build a cart and put this engine on it........ who knows....
