How to tell what kind of motor?

Hey, my friend picked up an engine that looks like a 300 but when he went to the auto store to buy parts for a 300 they didnt fit his motor. I know the motor is from the 50's. How do you tell what kind of motor it is? Is it a 223?

The 300 didn't come out until 1965. If his engine is from the '50s, it is likely a 223, unless it's an earlier flathead six.

What number is cast into the block? Should be something like EBP-H,
EBP-L, etc.

Dan

could also be the 215ci

easy to tell the difference 'tween the 215 and the 223. the 215 has the distributor in the center of the block, and the 223 has the dist. in the front just rear of the timing cover.

the most obvious way to tell the diff between an early I-6 (215-223-262) and the later ones (300 series), is the intake and exhaust on the 223 block series is on the left (read drivers) side of the head, and the later 300 series intake and exhaust is on the right (read passenger) side of the head.

hope all that garbage helps
