I think I killed my bird

So I was tweaking the idle mixture and gave the throttle a hard rev or two (4K-ish) and when it came back to idle clack-clack-clack-clack-clack! Seems to be coming from the valve cover, louder on the exhaust side. Urgh! Not good. Heading to garage to remove valve cover and have a look.

Surprisingly, the sound seems to have gone away. Spark plugs looked good. Awesome, in fact. And yes, I have visible cracks and leaks in my exhaust manifold gasket, so it might have just been that. It's the white kind of gasket that Clifford's uses and they are total crap. When will they learn that the metallic gaskets are the only kind that work for more than a year? Used to have the same problem with Honda aftermarket gaskets. The Honda brand metallic gaskets where the only ones that sealed.

Will have to hook up a proper oil pressure gauge tomorrow and see if I spun a bearing or something. Judging from the hot oil shower I took running my oil-through lifters without a valve cover the pressure is fine.

Life is funny: I've been waiting six years for an excuse to build a nice, balanced engine with a hot cam, and now that I'm looking down the barrel of that, my clients have all stopped paying me because they are all broke.

Don't you love how they are such kind-hearted people, they want to share?

Well, then I guess I can keep revving the sh** out of it! YeeHaw! Better replace that exhaust manifold gasket, though. That's a PITA. It takes me twice as long to install the header bolts than to r & r the whole head with valve train. Need some offset wrenches, I guess.
