I think the timing mark on my pully is wrong

I just tried to work on the car again. I'm certain that everything is in the right place(wires, timing, etc). The car will start but when I let off the gas it quickly dies. I looked in the carb when the car was off and when I pushed up the accelerator lever it did squirt gas in the venturi. I didn't do the multimeter checks that Addo suggested. I need someone to help me do that. I noticed a puddle of gas on the intake manifold were the carb rests. I don't know if it splashed out or what.

Is there a better way to test for a vacuum leak than the spraying the WD-40 method? I sprayed it all around and nothing. All of the bolts are tight. I did just rebuild it and might have missed something

You can try a DIY "stethoscope", using either a length of vinyl tube to listen at a precise point, or the wooden dowel that gets pressed against various locations to hear local noises.

A vacuum gauge will indicate overall manifold vacuum, and this can be a good guide.

All carbs have a leak past the throttle shaft, but it is a small and controlled leak. When shafts wear in their bores, is when the leak becomes greater than you really want - and low speed operation is compromised.

Regards, Adam.
