intake manifold gasket leak?

a couple of days ago i was driving my car, (66 coup) when all of a sudden a loud choppy noise started coming from under the hood. it sounded like a Harly motorbike under the hood. just before that my friend who was driving behind me said he saw smoke come from my exhaust pipes. when i popped the hood and the noise sounded like it was coming from where the trans. attaches to the engine but im not sure. this is not normal. any help would be much welcome.

what color smoke? Head gasket is a possibility. If you have a stock head, there is no intake manifold gasket. If he saw white smoke, you probably blew the head gasket.

I'd go with what Cobra six said but add maybe a exghust gasket.

I had the same type of noise but no white smoke and it was the head gasket.
