is it true that a ds2 is not a good swap for a 64 170? Something about the distributor gear not fittingin the block?

The 64 170 has a 1/4" oil pump drive and a slightly smaller hole in the block. Gotta change out the oil pump for one with a 5/16" drive and either ream the hole out bigger or sand down the DS2 to fit.

It's not hard going. The sensible swap is to turn down the distributor pilot shaft below the gear to 0.490 inches (starts at 0.530"). Then fit the later oil pump asnd hex shaft off a '66 200. Wallaka knows which part number that is, in Mellings stuff.

8) it depends on when your 170 was made. the change in distributor shafts was done as a running change in the 1964 model year. as to when i dont know. i do know that my 64 170 has the smaller shaft since it was built in last 1963, but i have heard of 64 170's that have the larger shaft. so try the swap first before you change the shaft size. if you need to make the change, then do so. just remember that you will also have to up size the oil pump shaft also to 5/16, which means an oil pump change to a later pump as well.

Yes sir, that's a Melling M65-B.

I'll agree with rbohm, check your engine first. My '63 170 has the 1/4" shaft, my '65 200 has the 5/16" & I've found a '64 144 in a wrecking yard with the 5/16" shaft. So you never know.
