It Started!!!

Today I filled the fluids and added with one quart of ATF in the oil. Cranked the engine for about 30 seconds with no plugs in to flush the gas lines again. Once I had clean gas coming from the line before the filter, I put in plugs, connected fuel line and cranked it again.

The engine caught after about five seconds, but the valves were really loud, and the idle was way high. I let it run high for about five mins to clear it out and shut it down, checked for leaks and ran it again for ten more before slowing down the idle. After ten minutes it quieted down and sounds like a different engine. I ran it for 30 more minutes, and temp and oil pressure stayed good. It's not purring but it doesn't sound bad. There's still some smoke , but nothing like the first five minutes! :)

Congratulations!!!

Very glad to hear it...sounds like you were thorough in cleaning and prepping (flushing fuel etc.). I'd still do a couple short changes with cheap oil and filter just to finish your cleaning, don't remember what shape your fuel tank was in, but I'd be sure to run an extra inline filter if you're not already...
...but well done! another six back from the brink!

Good deal man!! Trust me, that little guy in the video? I have one just like him and he'll be driving that car in no time! That is if his sister doesn't beat him to it. Mine is ten and has claimed ownership of both my vehicles. HAVE FUN!!

New gas tank and sending unit. New rubber gas lines, and flushed lines with air. I'm gonna run the engine about two hours and then do an oil change, then repeat. It's still smoking a bit, and the idle seems high still.
So now that it is running, I'm in uncharted territory. I adjusted the idle down as low as it would go, (screw on bottom drivers side of carb counter clockwise) but when I give it gas the rpm's stay high after I let off the gas. Shouldn't it come back down to idle pretty quickly?
Also would the slight smoke in the exhaust be coming from leaky valves? I'm getting water from the pipe, but some smoke.

Smoke could be from you "wetting" down the cylinders. It takes awhile to burn off. Then again, as bad as the engine was described to be (didn't see the pictures as they were removed before I had a chance to) the valve seals could have dried up and cracked or just be totally gone. I receieved (free) my Mustang with most of the engine in the trunk, there were NO seals on the valves and I didn't catch it because I just wanted to see if it ran at all. After driving around some I noticed it was smoking and low and behold, no valve seals :) Pull the valve cover and take a peek again.

I think Ronbo has you pointed in the right direction with the valve stem seals...unless it's water vapor and not smoke you're seeing...hopefully not.

As far as the rpm's staying elevated after letting off the pedal, I'd check the choke/high idle setting, or it could be a stuck/sticky power valve. If you're running an autolite 1100 (very common carb), I'd check the throttle plate linkage under the fuel bowl (front part of throttle shaft on the radiator side of the carb). The throttle shaft/accelerator pump/fuel vent rod linkage (the linkage connnects all these and alsow works the anti-stall dashpot if you have one) on the 1100 lines up real close to a heater hose and clamp feeding a spacer plate under the carb. Make sure it's not hangin up there.

Good luck!

Congrats, i'm glad to hear that another i6 has been awakened after a long slumber...

on the idle, check your timeing with a timeing light... put it @ 9-11*
my idle seemed really high and i found out my timing was @ 30+*

the gas/air mixture should be on the passangers side... that can help you lean/richen it for lower/higher idle settings... i'm sure you knew this but i like to remind myself i know what i'm talking about.. :D

Good Job

and good luck finishing

Richard

That Video was great. You guys will always remember that cool time together. I agree about the smoking with the previous post. Valve seals are your next project. I just replaced mine. Does'nt smoke at all now.

"WOO-HOO!" is right! That's terrific, and I'll bet your kids will remember it forever.

You had the same problem I did. I didn't know my timing was high until I couldn't get it to idle correctly.

Found out I was running 32 timing at idle.

I think the idle prob is related to the throttle. I've just gotten a throttle return spring and that had helped alot. The more I play with the throttle, the more I understand it. I need a stronger return spring, and a linkage that's not so rusty and stiff! When i push the throttle lever with my finger it goes down way lower than it did before.

Be carefull with the return spring, too strong and you'll get excessive wear in the throttle shaft bore area causing a massive vacuum leak. I literally destroyed a quadrajet this way as a kid.

I just re-visited your other post and the images posted there. Looking carefully at the first picture you can see a valve seal and if you look at the valve next to it, it is bare. The seal could have slid up while you were cleaning or, it could have dried up and got mushed to a thousand pieces never to be seen again 8)
