There's a noise coming on at higher revs on my 250.Not shure what it is.When I step on the gas at lower revs there's nothing wrong. But when reaching higher revs during shifting or in third at 45 or 50 it comes on.How to know the diference?

Howdy Maritn:

"Knock" or "Ping" is typically caused by pre-ignition or detonation. Pre-ignition is caused by a hot-spot, glow plug in the combustion chamber which ignites the A/F mixture before the spark from the sparkplug. Detonation can be caused by high cylinder pressures and heat causing a spontanious combustion.

The ping or knock occurs when an unplanned flame front collides with a planned flame front.

When does your knock happen? Hot engine? lugging? high load?
Has anything changed with the engine tune-up lately?

Adios, David

8) usually spark knock happens at low rpm under load when cylinder pressures and heat are at their highest. when you get a spark knock at higher rpms, you have what is known as preignition. they sound about the same, and have the same end result, engine damage if left unchecked, but they have different causes. detonation is usually caused by higher cylinder pressures and the extra heat that results from those higher pressures. this can also cause a hot spot in the normal carbon build up on the pistons to glow, but not cause a preignition condition until the cylinder pressures rise to a high enough point to allow it.

high rpm preignition is usually caused by a plug that is too high of a heat range for the engine. what happens is that the high heat range plugs retain heat, and the tip will glow hot enough to light the fuel mixture prematurely. sometimes it can get real bad and light the mixture off as soon as it enters the cylinder causing a high rpm backfire(ever see a blower pop off a top fuel motor at the track? that is severe preignition.). in your case i suggest trying a plug one heat range colder, or use an extended nose plug as that will allow the incoming fuel mixture to cool the plug without lighting off.

Thanks guys.I replaced a tranny with noisy bearings a few days ago.Now I started to hear this.I fearing it could be a worn out connecting rod.I always pump the expensive gas ...I'm going to mess around whith the timing on saturday and see what happens.Should I move the distributor a tad clock wise or counter clock wise? Any recomended spark plug? Excuse my wrong spelling guys..my English sucks...but still better than your chinese.

to retard the timing, you will turn the distributor clockwise. my memory key for that is "screw it in retard", as turning it in teh direction of screwing it in will retard the timing

my 300 has a piston knock under moderate-high revs under moderate throttle, goes away if i floor it. a case of detonation or spark knock will get worse as you give more pedal

Today I installed Autolite Spark plugs. They don't look any different than the Motorcraft that I was using.I gave 0,50 gap.Little bit more than I was using. When I drove it and I felt an improvement in low end torque. But the noise was still there.I then gave the distributor a tad clockwise.I had never messed whith the timing and everything is stock on this 250.I felt this made the noise level to decrease and at high revs its gone.May be I will retard the timing a bit more tomorrow.Happy new year to all of you guys.
