Leaky Coil

When I first got rid of my points and began running a Pertronix Ignitor, I bought one of their Flamethrower coils and about a year and a half later, it began to leak oil where the wire to the distributor plugs in. I bought a MSD Blaster 2 to replace it and have also since replaced the Ignitor with a MSD control module and Duraspark II dizzy.

I pulled the wire off last week and noticed oil again. I soaked it up and when checking again today, I pulled off the wire and it really started flowing out! The MSD coil was probably on for about 3 years. Also, I'd moved the coil mount from the engine to the shock tower.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this or a better coil to recommend for my setup?

there is a screw in the main (secondary) terminal of any classic style ignition coil, which connects to the secondary winding. This screw, when removed, also allows for purging the coil from any of its (toxic!) transformer oil, although that feature might not have been intended originally.

I could see that screw as I soaked up the oil with a Q-tip. Maybe I'll see if it's loose and torque it down a little. Would that potentially screw up something. I guess the worst it could do is quit working.

I have the stock coil from when I was running points. If I put this in the trunk for emergencies would it work with the MSD module? Since it was used with a resistor wire (now bypassed), I imagine it doesn't have an internal resistor.

Well, that was it. The screw had backed itself out. I probably gave it 1-1/2 turns to snug it down. I probably lost 1-2 tablespoons of oil. Hopefully it will last awhile.
