i am getting noise from my lifters, and in talking to my dad he is under the impression that the engine must be torn apart to replace them. is that true. or does anyone out there know of an easier way to do it? also what would be good things to upgrade while replacing the lifters? and does anyone know where to get a good rocker assembly?

Thanks Scott

to my understanding, from various things ive read, you only need to take the head off and use a magnetic tool to pull the lifters, but hey, i'm just getting into engine stuff.

As for the lifters, the only way to replace them is to take the head off. You might have to take the oil pan off and gently tap them up from the bottom as they like to wear themselves into a groove that can be had to get by. This requires a little work as you are going to have to replace the coolent, get new head gasket and other gaskets. DO NOT REUSE YOUR OLD HEAD GASKET!! Once you have removed it from an engine that has be run, it must be replaced. OR so I was told!

If you are looking for a new adjustable rocker assembly, i just got a new one from NAPA. They use a jamnut on the pushrod pivots instead of just a resistance screw thingy. Ask for a rocker assembly off of a 170 or 144 ( i think ).

One last thing. I had some lifter type noise comming from my engine not too long ago. It turned out to be that the rockers had worn down the tops of the valve stems and they were making clacking noises when they contacted the locks! Not good! So i had a valve job and then got a new set of rockers. Just a thought for ya!

Hope this helps!

Paul, do you have any pictures of that rocker arm assy? A jamnut would be a bit of an improvement over the resistance screw. What was the Napa #?

I don't know the part number. I had to use the box to send the core back in. I'm pretty sure that I just asked for a rocker assembly off of a 170. Ask them if they can check the assembly to see which kind it is before you buy it.

I'll try to get a picture of it. I have the car all buttoned up at the moment but I'll see if I can take the valve cover off tomorrow or Friday and get you a pic of it. All it looks like is the same bolt that is in there now but without a hex head on it. Instead, it has an allen hex hole in it and a skinny hex nut on the threads on the top to jam down.

I just put the lifters in to my 250 with the head on. You need a hydraulic lifter removal tool. It has two little "fingers" that expand into place and grab the lifter's clip groove. With luck and a little finnesse, you should be able to do it without removing the head.

I found one on Ebay, Item number: 2454311518

At least you will know what it looks like. I actually found the cheap ones work better than the good ones because it is easier to get into the holes in the head. The one I got I found at the local Checkers auto parts.

Being that I also had to remove the lifters from my old 200 cid about 3 yrs ago, I am pretty sure at least the head has to come off. I used a lifter removal tool that the parts store let me borrow (they knew me because I would go there at least once a week) and they all came out fairly easy. The type I used was the one that expands and grabs the inner part of the lifter.
Just make certain that it actually are the lifters that are making those noises you hear. I would hate for you to go through all that trouble and it not solve the noises.

My story for why I needed to replace my lifters- I had found oil in my coolant and coolant in my oil. So- blown headgasket. Removed head, replaced gasket. Started puting pushrods back in, and 2 of them seem to drop in awfully deep, moreso than the other 10. Then I realized I had 2 busted lifters.

HI
Are you sure its a lifter :?:
a blowin exhagust gasket will sound like a lifter as well.
I would hate to pull it apart if its just an exhagust gasket.
just my .02

Paul,
What is the price of the adjustable rocker arms, and the price of the core charge?
Thanks,
Doug

I have no clue as to the prices. My father picked it up for me before I went back home for christmas break. It was over 150 bucks at least!

the noise is a high pitched rattling noise that happens when i really get on it. i'm 90% sure its not an exhaust issue. but i'm gonna check it out simply because i dont want to have to do the lifters at all.

yeah its rattling. i want to open it this weekend but i'm having a little sister sometime this weekend so maybe next week. shes got impeccable timing. j/k. i'll keep you guys posted on my findings. thank you all so much for the help
