Lifters or predetenation

Will a collapsed lifter sound the same as predetenation? Or, what would cause a small knocking sound if I set my advance beyond 10 degrees.

I thought I eliminated this problem a few months ago when I replaced the lifters but I guess it's something new now. :x

Can you hear it while idleing or just revving the engine in nuetral? You're only going to hear detonation under a load (while driving).

I just hear the knocking while revving in nuetral or park.

or...don't overlook the often overlooked exhaust leak. It will sound like a lifter too.

The other thing that might be wrong are wrist pins. They can sound like lifters when you rev the engine. Some times wrist pins will rattle at start-up and then kinda go away when the engine warms too. But a buddy of mine had an Escort that the wrist pins sounded just like lifters when he revved the engine.
