Load o matic ... confused

Hey Guys,

I am confused about my setup and if it's right...I have a 66 mustang coupe. Inline 200. Autolite 1100.
My confusion is this. When I bought the car several months ago, the carb has the spark control valve plugged with some kind of metal nipple the prev. owner put in..There are no lines whatsoever coming from the distributor. the rubber "vacuum"?? line from the dizzy diaphram is just lying along the fender well.... I am not familiar with distributor identifications, but I think it is a load o matic.. the shaft is the solid, "D" shape, points, condensor, smaller, black cap, going to a stock looking coil.
Now, the car runs fine..it idles a little, I mean just a little, rough, but no other problems.
Is this right?? If this were/is a load o matic, shouldnt the vac line be connected and the spark control valve active???...there is also a metal line coming from the passenger side of the carb, just in front of the spark control valve that is broken in half ( not sure what this is called ), but like I said, car runs fine

I guess im looking for an answer to a problem I may not have.. i just want everything to be hooked up right, and get premium performance from a currently stock setup.

Thanks , Kelly

If your dizzy was a load-o-matic it needed a vacuum line to its vacuum canister for proper function.

remove the distributor cap and rotor, then remove the breaker plate assembly. peek underneath; lack of the mechanical advance consisting of two centrifugal weighs clearly identifies as a pre-68 load-o-matic.

you state that the car runs well in idle; how is acceleration?

Acceleration is not bad, no hesitation..throttle response is ok. I believe the timing is , in fact off a little which I guess is what im getting with the little bit a rough idle. It had some pinging when I floored it, but I put on new plug wires and Bosch Platinums, and that went away.

I will check for mechanical advance and see whats going on there.

I'm willing to bet that the hose on the fender wall needs to be connected to the dizzy. That's what it sounds like. If you have a vacuum diaphragm on the dizzy (which pretty much all of them have), then it needs to be hooked up to the carb.

When buying a new rig you never know what the owner has done to it. First-things-first. Write down the number on the dizzy and look it up. Identify if it is in fact a Load-O-Matic or a later dizzy. Once that is known for sure you can proceed with getting things hooked up properly.

Good luck, Ric.

Ok, thanks guys,

Aside from Simon's post about pulling the breaker plate and checking the prescence of any mechanical advance, etc. where on the dizzy would the identifiers for it be ??

Slade, can you tell me where the vac hose thats laying around needs to go exactly.... Spark control valve?, or where.

I replied to your email. Also, when I get home, I'll look on my computer for stored pictures of my old 1100 set up. I just don't have access to them on my work computer.

The metal hose that is on the passenger side of the carb could be the one that goes from the choke to the exhaust manifold. I have an Autolite and that is the only metal line I have on the passenger side of the carb.
