I pulled a complete motor from a 81 Fairmont with auto, it was a Calif smog motor. I will de-smog it and put it in a 63 Ranchero with a 4 spd. I am confused about a couple of things that I hope all you out there can answer. What carb do I want to use to replace the smog carb? Is there a right and wrong carb to use with the Duraspark? Thanks for any help out there, need all I can get regarding Duraspark and right carg

Howdy Jud:

Welcome to the Forum. I'm assuming you are looking for a 1barrel OEM type carb to replace the smog carb? If that's true you will want a post '67 carb. Your late model DS II is designed to use ported vacuum from the carb.

The best two choice IMHO are, the 1969 250 Autolite 1101. Or the Carter RBS, 1970 to '74 250. Both are clean, simple carbs, with ported vacuum for the distributor and are rated at 215 CFM.

There may be other choices as well that meet the criteria, but these are OEM and are known to work.

Adios, David

Jud;

Welcome to the I6 "in" place!

First, get Dave's (CZLN6, above) book, for sure. There's more answers in there than you can think up questions for! :wink:

Second, if you don't have to deal with the smog issues, THROW THE HOLLEY 1946 AWAY as far as you can! It cannot be easily modified to work with non-EGR engines, and will frustrate the tar out of you if you try.

At higher altitudes, like around Denver, the old Autolites work real well. If your hood has headroom, you might consider the H/W 2-stage 2bbl types if you're looking for the fun driving experience with some still-good-MPG numbers. The simplest setups are the 1bbl ones, and the biggest of those are the ones mentioned by CZLN6.

But, if you want POWER, look into the Falcon Performance Handbook mentioned above. That's the trick setup, and Dave can help you with the tuning, too!

Good luck with your new project - keep us posted!
