MegaSquirt Anyone?

Who has built one and ran? Who would do it again? Who could we call our resident MS genius?

Looking to build (with help, make that a lot of help) one for the 300 and one for the Mercruiser 470 4 banger.

Physical parts no problem. Intake manifold/ plenum, fuel injector rails, throttle body, etc.

Being a MAP system how sensitive is the MS system to a radical cam, is there a MAF version? What a sequensital injection instead of batch?

Tell me about tuning. PLease.

My only annoyance is the 8 bit map. Otherwise they are easy to assemble and use. Great support with megatune and the like, thanks in no small part to the Canadian technical school teacher. Used them on turbo application with radical cams and the closed loop algorithm is very handy.

Latest versions do support MAF. Look into Microsquirt, they are in a plastic case with weather pack connector. The MAF code was originally written for it. There are a few things it can't do so do your research.

What are you thinking for injectors and throttle body? Ignition?

Thats that 1/2 460 thing right?

My boat has the 140 / 181 chev. I have thought about EFI on it but no plans at this time. I have a friend that has a couple of boats w/302 in em. In the fall he got a great deal on a complete 2001 5.0 out of an exploder. Plan is to put it in complete and MS it. Same guy has an identical boat with the 165 chev I6 but it has a transom problem. On older V motors I read that you can install the o2 sensor in the exhaust/ EGR crossover. Not sure what do with an inline.

I wouldnt call myself an expert on MS but for the last 2-3 years I have been doing a lot of reading on EFI. Bought my MS2 V3 about a year ago and got it running in the fall. That car is in winter storage but I grabbed the ECU and am tempted to start another project. Plan now is to keep refining the current install and then do the 200 in my 66 with the tempo throttle body.

I fitted a Megasquirt to my Falcon two years ago...
I built it inside a Ford ecu casing so it bolted straight up to the standard wiring harness. It started first go (badly, but it ran!!). I have since gone to triple coils (the dissy just runs the oil pump now!) I use the MS box to run the electric fans etc. It is great, even with my crappy tune it runs better than the stock Ford ecu.

There is an adaptor for MS to EEC4, to make life easier for some. My setup uses a V3.0 pcb with the MS2 processor. I have 12X12 spark and fuel maps, and more stuff to fiddle with than I want to know about. It supports Wideband O2 also (I want one!!).

I love it, it is a great system.

wagon,
You answered a PM for me on the Megasquirt forum site, so I thought I'd continue it here.

When you added the OEM EFI intake to the carby head, did you have to mill the injector port cutouts in the head? Or did your heads already have the cutouts?

I'm just about to install my Megasquirt into a 1987 F-150 300. I had Matt at DIYautotune make me a custom adapter board and harness. The adapter replaces the factory Ford ECU, and then plugs right into the Megasquirt. This way I don't have to hack up the factory wires and I can change back to the factory ECU if I need to. It is a really sweet way to convert a factory EFI setup.

Today I installed my Innovate LC-1 wideband digital AFR gauge/setup. It is really cool to watch the changes in AFR as you drive down the road. I'm told a wideband setup really helps with the tuning, especially when you are starting from scratch like I am.

I plan on doing a small write up and posting some pics soon.

Yes the wide band is indispensible with the MS and gamma correction. You are about to see just what the VE of your engine is in all it's ignominious glory.

A note about the widebands, ignore them at first and get the engine to sound good. This will get you in the ballpark then you can read the wideband and start to dial it in. When things are running poorly the wideband readings dont tend to be correct due to things like missfires and such.

Sorry, didn't watch this thread... My head already had the cutouts for the injectors (efi was an option from 1983 on).

I have run a microsquirt on my engine briefly (with the MegaScott EEC4 adaptor) and it worked well. If your wiring harness is in good order the adaptor board and Megasquirt is a fantastic combo. UNLESS you are into pain, like me, and you use a dead EEC4 case, a connector and a MS pcb.... just fits, but looks oem.

Nag me if you want me to take some pictures for all to see..

The coilpack is off an EF or AU Falcon (Australian!). It is driven by an EDIS 6 module (most likely off a US Explorer, or something). Works really well, much better than a dissy!

wagon -

ive got a megajolt kit i need to assemble- the ignition only setup (think its by the megasquirt guys?).
that i will eventually put on a ford 6 non crossflow ie 200ci.

anyways couple of questions :

1)do you have an ignition map map you would be willing to share? as i
will need something as a starting point

2)where did you get the edis 6 from ? - in aust or overseas .

i was looking here but didnt identify any cars with them as stand alone
( think they are part of the ford eec computor?)

3)is that a ballst resistor on the coil pack ?

i picked up a holden (GMH to overseas readers ) coil pack - which is what started my whole collection of bits for this. hope the falcon doesnt have rejection symptoms with the H*lden coil pack!

1) You can have my map if you like, but it is pretty c@#p.
2) I got the EDIS module from the US. It is off a mid 90's exploder, I think. No Aussie Fords had external EDIS.
3) There is no ballast resistor. That black thing is a capacitor.

If using EDIS I would use an EF or AU1 coilpack, although the GM item may work OK, but I'm not sure.

wagon thanks - i have sent you a pm.

any map is better than what i have now -ie none.

i see the edis 6 are available in the US- so will give that a go.
