I was looking at this once again available article and really like the build. Pretty impressive output with a YF 1v. In the article Mike mentions detonation due to compression ratio so with about 9.2 it might have been trouble free with a bit of a loss in power no doubt. But I don't see any mention of 3 angle valve or back cut or high ratio rockers and going through an aod still getting an estimated 145 rwhp/185 fw. Probably at least 30 hp more than my stock 70 250 which is enough to make a big difference over my already good performance. But simple and reasonable in cost. My original plan was a direct mount then got interested in an Aussie head if I could find one. I have a 250 out of a 79 Monarch to use. One thing I wasn't sure about was finding a competent machine shop for the 2v direct mount so that is part of what led to the Aussie head.
Since I have been casually looking for an early Mustang maybe the Aussie head might be better on that.
Anybody else have a build like this?

My 250 Engine Specs

1973 Maverick 250 C9DE block, .030 overbore, decked .040
Stock Cast Crank, turned .10/.10
255 V8 Pistons, 9.8-1 CR, 1.585" compression height

Comp Cams 260 hydraulic camshaft, springs, lifters
DSII Distributor Swap & MSD 6A
Adjustable rockers on shimmed stands
D8BE 200 cylinder head, mild porting
Clifford headers with 2" dual exhaust, Dynomax Turbo mufflers
14" Hayden electric fan
'91 Lincoln AOD transmission
1 bbl Motorcraft (Carter YF) carb from 78 Granada

Notes

This engine turned a best of 15.98 @ 86 mph. Based on the curb weight of car and driver of 3100lbs, I guesstimate it produces 185 hp at the flywheel and puts about 145 to the pavement.
Because the 250 has the same bellhousing pattern as a small block Ford, the AOD was an easy addition using the following parts:

A 1991 Lincoln MkVII transmission
Flex-plate from an AOD equipped, 300 ci, 1987 Ford F-150
A Windsor-Fox crossmember
A custom TV lever and rod hooked to the original C4 kickdown linkage
Original shifter and modified linkage rod
New transmission coolant lines
1" shortened driveshaft
Original C4 yoke, driveshaft shortened 1"

With 3.55 gears, the engine turns 2350 rpm's @ 70 mph. Gas mileage ranged from a low of 19.2 to a high of 27.7 mpg. On average, I got 22.5-23.5 mpg in daily driving.

HiYa!

"...D8BE 200 cylinder head, mild porting…"
details on the porting please. I have a pneumatic bur…

thanks~

What worked nice for me Chad was using a burr to get the shaping done then using those 3m pointed sanding rolls or "cartridges" for the smoothing. Luckily I could get them fairly cheap through work. The off brand rolls are to be avoided ime, they just unwind at the slightest thing or aren't even wound tight enough to be tight on the mandrel in the first place....

I didn't do anything to the chambers, to afraid to screw them up... Did all my work on the bowls and the up the ports and in from the exhaust and a little port matching on the exhaust. If you stick your finger up those intakes you can find flash and snap it off to. It's all best done before the head goes in for work though b/c of all the grit and debris

I'm familiar w/them Seth. Kinda 'stepped' not 'cone' like as would be more helpful?
What grit? or did U go progressive (from what to what grit?).
Thanks~

I'll have to look at what I have left, but I think I went 80 then 120. Might have stopped with 80 on the intake side.
