more head woes....

...so i got my head back from the machine shop, again, after they dressed the valve seats i messed up while porting and polishing, got it back together and decided to check the chamber volumes. got an accurate burette, plexiglas plate, atf, etc. i did them twice just to make sure, as i didn't like the first results, here's what i got:

cyl 1 - 54, 53 cc
cyl 2 - 54, 54
cyl 3 - 52, 52
cyl 4 - 52.5, 52.5
cyl 5 - 52, 52.5
cyl 6 - 51, 51

i was thinking that when the machine shop took 0.060" off the head, they didn't have it level. but, i put a dial indicator on the center of each intake valve and compared that to head surface, and they are all with 0.010" of each other, ranging from 0.510" to 0.520", and not decreasing from cyl 1 to 6 as i expected. i checked the dimensions of the chamber at the head surface, roughly, to see of there was anything wierd there. no appreciable difference.

should i be worried about 3 cc difference between 1 and 6? should i go back in and grind away until they're all the same? given that they seem to be about the same shape now, where would i take material off to get the 51 cc chamber to 54?

thanks for any help....

well it could be that the casting was that far off already.....

I would just take an even amount off the small ones only. even if you only get out 1cc it will help make it more even.

Good ole FoMoCo quality control. This much variance is not unusual. The question is, how accurate do you want to be?

I'd even them up.

It is best to remove material to unshroud the intake valve, near the spark plug. Sneak up on it and remeasure often.

Enjoy the journey.

thanks again, david, after sleeping on it, i agree with evening them up for max operating smoothness. i'll work around those intake valves.....

well, THAT was time-consuming. after the two hours it took me to measure all six cylinders, twice, last night, today i spent four hours grinding, polishing and re-measuring. but, got 'em all between 53.2 and 53.8. my technique got better as the day went on. thanks again david and turbo-fairlane.....
