MPGmustang engine build (Completed)

okay, 4th times the charm, retyping this...

Bubba,
I can't see how anything that big would fit, If I placed one where the adjuster screw is it wouldn't fit/rev as the screw travels in a small area, if installed the opposit way the device would be in the way of the throttle inkage...

Robert,
Your Idea sounds more like it... the carb wasn't changed from before it's the DUI that is new.

1)yes, and the SCV is capped off
2)vacuum source to 3 things off the same bunge, PCV - vac gage - dizzy cannister
3)IDK, why because I was running 91 gas and set it decently at 11* then changed gas to 87 and I'm/Was pinging so at a stop light I've been changing it to retard it (clockwise) but still need to retard it more... working on it... :banghead:

Do I have an adjusable vac cannister? how do I adjust it? no there weren't instructions with it. except the online install on CI website.

i'll drive it with out vac hooked up and time it to where it won't ping, then try the vac and adjust that till I don't ping... if it's not an adjustable cannister what do I ask for at napa/oriely's/autozone?

Richard

sorry I didn't get back earlier this is a 64hr work week and with 15credit hrs of shcool i'm swamped, tierd and cranky... and my car isn't working properly... adding to my stress

If the vac. advance is ajust. you just stick an alen wrench into the vac. fitting and turn it up or down. (y)

no its inside the can pull vac hose off and slip into the tube

Well guys just giving a quick once over at Performance Distributors site it appears the vac cans on their dizzys are not adjustable...somewhere on the site it mentioned "adjustable vacuum is not necessary" given their custom tuning/curving process. Also, I wouldn't completely rule out bubba's thoughts on a solenoid doing the trick...just ran across this on ebay the other day, and can't say I remember seeing an rbs with a solenoid mount before...I learn something new everyday, or try to at least :) (rbs seems almost as busy as the 1100 at the throttle connection...maybe there's a smililar animal for the 1100 : ...if that's what's called for)
1974 RBS on Ebay w/solenoid

My first guess in previous post was a need to fine tune the timing given your somewhat unique setup (beefier cam=less vacuum; engine slightly loaded or rpm decreased by a/c=a little less vacuum still), but obviously I'm betting you're most interested in whatever adjustment/adaptation get's it running best throughout the range, right?...as well you should be.
So looking at PD's site I also noticed one of their major selling points is custom tuning all their distributors to each individual customer's build (apparently they don't even sell spring kits...they'll do that for you...from their FAQ)
(We need information about the vehicle and engine such as cam duration & lift, compression ratio, carburetor size, vehicle weight, towing weight (if applicable), maximum rpm, transmission and octane of fuel.)
Do you know if this was done for yours? Have you checked back with Mike to see if he might have some suggestions? Given what they take into account in the tuning/curving process it might be best to check back with the specialists at CI or PD.
As I understand it Mike stays pretty busy, but also stands behind his products completely...I'm reluctant to make further suggestions, given the investment in that item. However, IIWIYS I certainly would not operate with any amount of detonation...get by in the meantime with less advance and a higher throttle setting if need be before allowing that to happen.

okay, maybe this post will work... anyone else having these posts not posting for you?

Bubba, my DUI isn't adjustible I tried the smallest, and there is nothing but a flat plate

Robert, that's a nice find, but it's not my 1100 :( maybe I could adapt one on.

well I agreed with some fine tunning, so I took her for a drive after I confirmed and set timing at 10* no vac nice but slow, I eventually got up to 15-16* and still didn't ping, I bet I could go more but don't want to... i still need to find a hill.
then added the vac and no pinging :)

I was able to set the Idle so that it falls into it's "lope Idle" 550-750 :D (sounds amazing) and still haven't tuned it for A/C, vac is roughly 5-7hg (rought idle = rough vac)

now with the engine alone at perfect idle right now, I can continue to adjust for the A/C. right now, It seriously feels like it should die. but doens't (with A/C on it's almost 400rpm) it's not charging the bat until 1100rpm. but it can at least run with out it.

What do you guy's think of the current success?

next step, increase Idle for A/C

Well it will take some fab work the sol. is small and you would only need a simple L bracket on throdle arm for it to push on. The Fords that had Fac. AC came with them (my Maverick 250 has one of corse is a Carter. There were many after market AC kits too and many other brand of cars that use them like the imports or other Fords about anything up to before an EFI system.

It soulds like you are going in the right direction on your tuning! (y) Yes you do need to find the best in. advance first (until light ping on a slight grade or load) and then you tune for the best idel mix and vacume(with the AC off)?

Yep, sounds like you're getting there. That would be the order I would work in...best tune with vac hose plugged, then best tune with vac adv connected, last best tune with a/c.

Vac adv should not contribute to pinging under load or near WOT to WOT...vac adv usually drops out at this point (acts as timing retard if you like) and you're all mechanical/centrifugal.

When working through each phase I like to set/target curb idle first, set to desired timing second, then adjust/check mixture third...rinse & repeat as necessary :D
Good luck!

stupid Q... due to AZ really flat where i live, is WOT okay to tune with, or should I really find a hill? (I can find one it's just out of the way)

good, at least I'm almost there :) I really wish I had a dial back timing light.

AZ is cooling off now, I can ride down the street with the windows down :D

You could tune it for flat ground but your not really looking for it at WOT. A freeway on ramp can have enough of a grade to load the engine. Light ping in high gear with about 1/3 to 1/2 throdle, to add more confuseion you need to whatch you engine temp too. If you have a timing light you could set it about 2 degrees advanced and then try it and repeat as needed. Good Luck!

Engine temp, elevation, all affect the timing I can have.

I went from 2400 feet (chander home) to about 7000 feet (flagstaff) and a few things i've noticed.

1) the temp was cooler, meaning I was able to advance the timing from ~8* to ~16* and still not ping, I didn't try any more cause I knew on the way down I would ping due to temps.... back here in the valley, it settled at ~11* (the ~ is because I guess what mark the timing nitch is around.)

2) I don't think I have a big enough jet up high at 7k feet, almost seemed she wanted more. but down here in the valley 2k feet, she seems too rich.

3) last time on the way up to flagstaff, same route, I got 18mpg with m LOM, now with my DUI I got 23mpg! !! very nice! and just so everyone knows it's uphill the whole way. :D

I finally got it to run @ 600rpm with the A/C on.

The car sounds great! I am wanting to do something simular with my engine. Can you throw out a "budget" number I need to save for?
