My car won't start :(

So Sally is my 65' coupe mustang with a 200 and 3 speed manual. I got her about 2 years ago as a birthday present. I had been slowly working on her she has some rust issues but engine ran awesome. But now she won't start for while I was having to keep my foot in the throttle to keep her running and then she stopped starting all together. So I started trouble shooting. If I pour some fuel down the carb she will start for a little and idle but then die so I figured it was a fuel problem. I changed the fuel filter is was red from what looked like rust but it has a new tank so that worries me but now it will sort of start if I put in foot in the throttle and keep it there, but even then it dies. What do u think is wrong?

I had a problem like similar like that only thing wrong was my carb got loose from all the vibration. check and see if ur fuel pump is working.
 
That was the next thing on my list to check. the gas in it has also been sitting for a while so I might check that too.

Do u know how long it’s been sitting and did they put fuel stabilizer in it when they let it sit.
 
Disconnect the fuel line and have it spill into a clear container - glass, hard plastic. NOT styro. Disconnect the plugs and have a helper crank the machine for you. Observe the fuel flow; clean or turbid, weak or strong, and consistent? You might even want to drain the tank and replace it fuel.

Modern fuel goes bad - separates - in a month or so, sometimes less. This will plug/varnish/sludge up your tank filter or the inline filter before or at the carb.
 
I did that. I couldn't watch the fuel coming out because I had to turn over the engine. The fuel coming out was orangeish with some small chunks of rust. I'm thinking my fuel lines are shot and they have clogged up my carb. I have the new filter in but if I put a second filter inline before the carb do u think it would protect it untill I can put new lines in? I think I can rebuild the carb before I can replace the lines. Should I put OEM lines back in or look for something stainless so they don't rust again?
 
I'd put in new lines and flush that tank.

then get a handfull of cheap, or a washable fuel filter and check/change regularly.

the lines are problably all gummed up, and the pump pickup maybe as well if you had gas that old in it and your seeing rust chunks come through the line.
 
If you have any sections of rubber hose on that fuel line, it is gummed up for sure. The ethanol is melting it from the inside. You need the cheap inline filter and check/replace the carb filter and the bowl, float and needle valve. If you have a foam float, it is probably not floating any more.
 
So I drained the tank put new gas in with stabil. Now she will stop but If I take the throttle down to idle she dies and misses really bad. I will be getting new lines very soon and the tank is new. I'm going to pull the plugs and clean them and rebuild the carb. Is the miss firing a product of the carb being clogged up? Also Im not getting chunks in the fuel anymore.
 
My car sits for quite some time so a buddy of mine told me about POR15. Has anyone ever tried it? Heard about it?
 
also if your car sits, replace the normal rubber parts of the fuel line with ethonal resistant ones. This should help them from becoming tapioka in the inside.
 
Hey guys, rather than start a new topic I decided to just ask here seing as how this is along the lines of what happend to me today.

I havent started my mustang since fall (67' 200) and it wont start, usualy it turns over (i got a new battery) so I unhooked the fuel filter and tried cranking it, I got a little fuel but not much. So I put some gas in the tank, same thing exept now im getting nothing :shock: Im thinking fuel pump, would you guys agree?
 
I'm thinking plugged tank filter. You know that ethanol is varnish remover. Fresh gas with ethanol will loosen up the sediment in the tank.
