new cam installed, engine won't start

hi,

i have reset valves yesterday.
I had a compression test this morning.
cold compression are as follow.

Condition :
(dry cylinder (no oil added)
cold engine, WOT, value read after 4 compression cycle.

cyl 1 : 140 PSI
cyl 2 : 145 PSI
cyl 3 : 140 PSI
Cyl 4 : 135 PSI
Cyl 5 : 140 PSI
cyl 6 : 140 PSI

there are all in a 10 % range so i guess that s okay.

note : pulley damper is about new, it's single groove with an extra power steering pulley bolted over. i can tell it have not slide out as the dot on the inside damper still facing the one i have made on the outside to ease advance reading.

i have set the engine back to about 12°. it start but can t keep running. i ll surely have to readjust mixture since i have readjust valve
and there might sucks more air now.

i have work on the engine today and make relevant progress on understanding the situation :D .

following an aussie mechanic I trust, i have investigated for vacuum leak.
I have made a new set of gasket of the intake (i cut them out of a cork gasket sheet).
old one were badly soaked with fuel.

I have disconnected white wire (advance) from the DSII.
reset advance to about 12-14 (hard to tell with engine of).
engine seem to run better, but i have ot push the advance a bit more (bout 20)
still better than 35.
I ll continue tomorrow with new carb adaptor and carb gasket.

I have also find that the cam spacer on the old cam.
I ll have to reopen timing cover this week end to reinstall it ... :bang: :bang: :bang: :arg:

how tight should the intake manifold torqued.??
there nothing about it on my aussie falcon manual.

I don't think cork is a such a good idea for the intake gaskets can be porous. IMOP Regular heavey gasket paper would be better to use on intake. Good luck

i agreed, but i do not have anything else right now. local shop was out of paper gasket. i was not to bad to give a try.
I have ordered a new gasket but is getting hard to source those part.
I will have to remove the intake someday soon to have the water jacket modify as it is to close from the shock tower anyway.

Hi,

i have reopen the timing cover this morning to reinstall the spacer (behind dowel pin).
I have noticed that when the dots are facing the pulley is showing about 20° btdc.

pulley have not slipped.

Is the engine supposed to be at TDC when the dots are facing ??
IMO it have nothing to do with tdc, just a random position where dots have to be facing, but if i were an engineer i would have made the design a way is would make sens.

after new intake gasket had been installed and valves had been adjusted it worked good for a while with decent idle on drive. but since it comes back as it was before.
may be cork gaskets just can 't work on intake and are prone to leak after a heat cycle.

engine still running rough on idle and rpm really stall when put on drive.
vacuum advance is now connected to holley advance

thanks for answer.
