was looking at new coils today and with the pertronix I don't need a resistor wire other than the coil. so will any aftermarket coil be ok without a balast?

Yes, any coil will run on 12 volts, i.e., without the balast resistor. However, a coil intended to run in a 6 volt system (Ford used 6 volt coils with a resistor in the wire between the ignition switch and the "+" side of the coil) will not last as long. Better to go with a 12 volt coil if you intend to remove the resistor. The Ignitors (I and II) both perform better with the resistor removed. Why not take advantage of the opportunity to use a 12 volt coil?
