new motor won't start

ok I got my 200 together and got a starter in today....after spending the evening changing the pump drive (had put a 2.3ohc drive in by mistake and had to epoxy a rod to the end to get it out) I can't get it to fire/sputter/backfire I have spark that is nice and strong (pertronix in dual advance dizzy) I have fuel in the carb (can see it squirt) and I have compression. I am positive the cam is timed correctly (first ohv build for me....done timing on 2.3 lima motors hundreds of times) I can move the dizzy about 90 degrees and have retimed it a million times.....but it fails to do anything. even moving the dizzy while cranking produces no change in the cranking of it (doesn't speed up or slow down) I have a good cap and rotor and wires (spark on a pulled plug) but it fails to do anything. so does anyone have any good starting points? I have done 5-6 motor swaps before with no ignition probs ever always fired on the first try basicly (unless I forgot something like a rotor or coil wire) I need to get this started before friday because I need to drive it back to school this weekend and I would like to get 50-100 miles on the motor before then

Weird. 180° out on the dizzy is my first thought, but that will normally produce a healthy backfire.

Tried a squirt of fuel or ether into the log, rather than relying on the carb?

Also, verify your compression with a gauge.

Well if you have spark, fuel and compression. Then it’s got to be a timing issue or firing order issue. The only other thing would be a completely blocked off exhaust but that would be highly doubtful

well it was getting late so I had to give up around 11:30pm. tomorrow I will be able to give it my full attention and see what it is. I might just need a shot of gas to get it going right off. can't wait to get this going...stepped up to a 200 from my 170 (hyd lifters woohoo) and put in a t5 at the same time. best part is I have maybe $500 in the whole setup. hopefully I can get it started tomorrow and start workin on some break in miles before the weekend

Is your choke staying closed? I tried to start my 200 with a bad choke and had nothing not even a backfire, until SWMBO held the choke open with a screwdriver while I cranked it. Started right up.

well I pumped the gas a few times and messed with the timing and got it fired up.....go to backit out (snowing here) but the roads are so damn slick I could only go about 20mph!!! argh!!!

anyways I do have a small problem...I noticed when I had the motor apart that there was a rod gracing the oilpan a little. I tapped it with a hammer a little thinking it would clearance it enough....well it didn't so I have a nice tapping sound. I felt the pan and it is def coming from there. do you think it will be ok to drive? I was thinking of talking to a buddy at a body shop and seeing if they go use a stud welder to pull the pan a bit?

Do it! Sounds like a cool, quick fix. I'll save that one for the bag of sneaky tricks. Glad it started, too.

yeah turns out my idle screw was turned in too far......guess the bigger motor needed some more air. gotta tweak the timing more but took it for a little drive (clanking and all) in the snow and wasn't too bad....little soft on top but timing should fix that I hope. this motor is low compression (8:1) and my old motor had a milled head on it so right now they feel like the same amount of power......although now I will have to work on the turbo I think

You did fire it up and run at 2000 or more for 45min didn't you??????
Depending on how much time you have on the engine, I would still break it in!! (unless it's got an hour or so already...)

yeah I ran it for about 10 mins then went on a drive around the area (long straight country roads. the motor and been previously rebuilt but I wasn't thinking and when I turned it upsidedown on the eingein stand with the rockers off I dumped all the lifters in teh block and had to pull the head and decieded to inspect the rest while I was at it
