New Tri-power installed...couple questions

okay, I got it all put together. Fired it up and there is some obvious noise coming from the valves. The new head I bought came with non adjustable rockers, so i put those on because my old rockers had some rust. I have never adjusted valves before in my life, try to do it with no success. I was under the impression that my 63-170 block came with hyd. lifters, because that is what the shop manual says. So now Im at a loss, not sure how to proceed. :bang:

Was I right to just tourqe the rocker to spec and let the hyd, liftersw do they're thing?

Hi again,
Finally figured out the valves, put the old rockers on, they work fine. I had a little trouble getting it to idle, even with the block off plates. So, I pulled the center carb and to my surprise I had accidentally put washers on the carb studs UNDER THE GASKET!! :oopsie: What a bone head move. After I figured out that stupid mistake, she fired up nicely. I tuned two of the carbs individually, the third needs a new accelerator pump.
I'm well on my way to Tri-Power victory.
I'm having a little trouble figuring out the throttle linkage. As I have it now, when I push down the pedal to the floor I only get about 2/3 open throttle, and I have the cable pulled so taught that the actual gas petal doesn't even rest on the rod that comes from the engine into the cabin, I have been just pushing the rod with my foot during test drives. I will continue to try different stuff with the linkage. :hmmm:

Thanks for all your help!!! :thanks:

Oh yeah, 64/200 ranchero, thanks for the offer(autolite carb) I'm not in the market for one right now, but thanks anyways.

the throw lengths of the carb linkages and/or bell crank arms may have to be different, My setup uses original Offy linkages pulled by wider arc-longer throw cable pedal on center . Outer carb linkage uses close / inner carb throttle linkage position (1904's) for quick WOT sweep when center passes @ 2/3 throttle .

..took a little time to get it close to happy, pedal is 'littl heavier than I'd like when secondaries engage, maybe over-center springs... : hmmm...

Getting the linkages set is challenging. When I was running it, I didn't have headers yet so was still using the old rod and not a cable. Key is to find the right position and cable length to get the center to WOT. Focus on that one first. After that, I just set the mechanical linkages so that all three carbs hit WOT at the same time, which meant the outer carbs opened around 1/3 throttle. That was a tad bit low for my taste but I got used to it. You can always change that by cutting some new carb linkages that have longer throw arms so that actuation of the arms can come in later but act more quickly.

Hopefully that makes sense.
