Newbie Timing Question

Hi all,

Newbie question. 65 Mustang 200 I6, Autolite 1100, Pertronix II, Pertronix Flamethrower coil. I recently got this car, and never checked the timing prior to putting the Pertronix unit in. It would idle roughly when stopped, in gear, like at a stop light. I wanted to find out the timing, so I bought a light. I disconnect the vacuum line, and hit it with the gun. It was WAY past (above) the timing marks. Must have been 25 degrees or more. I rotated the dizzy to get the timing to about 12 and reconnected vacuum. Once I got it to idle well with the lean/rich setting and idle setting, I took it out for a spin. Very poor acceleration and it wouldn't shift well (auto). I got it back, and reset it to about 16 degrees. This seems to be a good compromise, although the acceleration and shifting aren't what they were at the setting initially.

is this typical?

a good place to start is check and make sure that the harmonic balancer has not spun on the rubber that could be the rough idle and could be why the timing marks are so far off. it is a common problem on something so old.

stupid question, but I'm assuming I chalked the correct mark. It is a small (1/8") line on the outside of the dampner, correct?
 
That is the correct mark and what he means is that this could have slipped out of correct position on the rubber bushing. You need to determine the true TDC (top dead center) and paint a mark there with a white marker or something. One of the strings here refers to finding TDC

You can check for corect TDC by pulling the #1 plug. rotate the motor by hand. Place a small screw driver in the hole and watch it when it starts to move contenu to rotate the motor making sure the screwdriver does not bind in the hole. when it stops moving up your are at TDC..now see where the mark on the dampner is at, it should be a 0. NOW THIS COULD BE 180 DEG OFF IF YOU WANT TO VARAFIV THE DIZZY LOCATION SO PULL THE CAP AND LOOK AT THE ROTOR IF ITS POINTING IN THE OTHER DIRECTION INSTADE OF #1 THEN TURN IT OVER AGAIN (FOLLOWING THE SAME PROCEDURE)

to fined the true TDC take the #1 spark plug out, remove the coil wire, put your finger in the spark plug hole to fined the compression stroke, turn the motor over by hand tell you feel compression, look in the spark plug hole and turn the motor tell you see the piston stop coming up and check for the timing mark if it is not on zero or very close to it than you need a new balancer.

.....YOU NEED TO CHECK TO SEE IF YOU ARE GETTING ADVANCE. IT SOUNDS LIKE TO ME IT IS NOT ADVANCING. ON YOUR SET UP YOU SHOULD HAVE AN ALL SPRING ACTION INSIDE THE DIST. THIS WILL BE ON TOP AND CAN BE SEEN EASILY.

.....YOU CAN TAKE OFF THE DIST. CAP AND UNDO THE VACUUM LINE AND HOOK UP A VACUUM HOSE TO THE DIAPHRAM. SUCK ON THE HOSE TO SEE IF THE ADVANCE WILL MOVE. IT SHOULD RESPOND WITH ANY CHANCE OF VACUUM. IF YOU GET NO MOVEMENT THEN YOU HAVE A DIAPHRAM THAT IS BAD. IF IT MOVES THEN CHECK FOR ANY LEAKS AT ALL. THIS SYSTEM MUST BE SEALED.

.....ALSO CHECK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE THE CORRECT DIST. AND CARB. AFTER THAT CHECK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE BOTH OF THE SPRINGS ON TOP OF THE ADVANCING PLATE. MANY TIMES PEOPLE WILL CHANGE THIS TO WORK INCORRECTLY. YOU NEED TWO SPRINGS AND THEY SHOULD BE PRETTY FIRM AND QUICK ACTING.

.....YOU SHOULD HAVE A METAL VACUUM LINE ALL THE WAY OVER TO THE DIST. DIAPHRAM. IF IT BEEN CHANGED OUT TO A RUBBER TYPE SYSTEM THEN YOU SHOULD LOOK AT BOTH ENDS FOR TIGHT FITTING CONECTIONS TO STOP ANY LEAKING VACUUM.

.....MANY TIMES SOMEONE HAS CHANGED THE CARB. OUT AND HAS GOTTEN THE WRONG CARB. FOR THE CAR. THIS IS WHAT USUALLY HAPPENS. YOU SHOULD HAVE A SPARK CONTROL VALVE (SCV) ON THE CARB. IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE YOU MIGHT THEN CHECK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT SET UP . SOMEONE COULD HAVE UP GRADED YOU CAR.

..... THE 170 IS A GOOD MOTOR AND WILL GIVE GOOD RESPONSE ...BUT WON'T OUT RUN MANY CARS. MY FIRST NEW CAR WAS A 1962 TUDOR FUTURA 170 W/AUTO. FOR IT'S DAY IT WAS GOOD. BUT IT IS SLOW TODAY.
