Noise

I am not sure what is making the noise, but it sounds like a knocking coming from the rear of the engine compartment. I just had my engine rebuilt so it shouldn't be the engine. I think it might be the transmission because the noise doesn't seem as loud in reverse or drive, but it could just be the difference in rpm. If anyone has any ideas please post them.

BTW, this is a 66 mustang with 200 and c4.

Make sure no engine parts are touching the motor compartment except the motor mounts and the transmission, anything exhaust or any part of the engine can create noise if it's just barley touching, have you checked for a broken motor mount?

Everything is tight and nothing is touching the engine compartment. I think the problem is in the area of the torque converter or transmission. Also, it sounds like a bolt is hitting something when the engine is turning.

The torque converter bolts are tight. I think it is either the transmission, the engine, or something where they join. I narrowed it down a lot. :D

I am having a similar noise come and go on my car. I talked with my mechanic tonight, and he asked me if I had ever replaced the starter with one from Autozone. I told him that I had, and he told me that some of their rebuilt starters use an inferior grade spring, which allows the bendix to slide out when you accelerate.

I do not know if he is telling me the truth or just a line of bunk, but I have a spare starter, which I plan on putting on my car tomorrow afternoon.
I will post a message if this fixes the problem for me. I wonder if he is right as all of the teeth on my torque convertor ring gear are chipped in the same spot.

Please let me know if you come up with something else.

Thanks.

Kurt.

Thanks for the tip, I also have an autozone starter. I thought it might be the problem, but I don't have a spare. So after i removed the starter, I thought ok now I'll check to see if it still makes noise. Obviously I could not start the engine. The funny thing is I almost removed the transmission to check that too.

Just thought I would let everyone know, I found the noise and fixed my car. The bolts holding the flexplate on were loose. So instead of pulling the transmission all the way out, I changed some of the bolts connecting the transmission to the engine. I put longer bolts in and slid the transmission back. Then I tightened the bolts and pushed the transmission forward again. This was a lot easier than trying to line up all the bolts after taking the transmission out. It was also a huge relief, I thought there was a problem with the gears in the transmission. Also, I wanted to thank everyone for their help.

P.S. Fixastang, check the starter housing for spots that are ground off. On a starter on my sister's car, there was some extra metal that was hitting the bolts on the torque converter. Also, check your harmonic balancer. This was a problem I previously had, but only when in gear.
