Oh my god! I have the new motor in and everything ready to go. I went to prime the oil pump only to find out the driveshaft was too far down for my primer(and dis.) to catch on to. What gives? Anyone had this problem before? It is the same distributor and shaft that I have always used. It is a new stock replacement Federal Mogual pump. Thanks for any help!

Okay, I did a couple searches on here and from what I could come up with is the 250 uses a longer shaft than the 200. Could I have a 250 oil pump in my 200? Could I use the 250 shaft? The drive shaft I have now is about 4.5" and it needs to be about 5". I DO NOT want to pull the pan off this thing!!!!!

Dan, I had the same problem just last week. Here is what I have found out in the last couple of days. I have both a 200 and a 250 sitting side by side on engine stands. I bought a NOS oil pump off Ebay, said it was for the 144, 170, 200, it happened to be a melling M-56B. It is at least 1/2" longer than the pump I had on the 200, A melling M-56A. I took the shaft out of the 250, and it was the same lenghth as the 200. So I had to pull the M-56B off the 200 and re-install the M-56A back on. There was nothing wrong with it when I had the 200 in last year, so back on it went and Voila, shaft is fine. Did you by chance get a 56B instead of a 56A? Hope this helped.

Thanks for the info. Not what I was wanting to hear but it helps. I just ordered a new 250 shaft. It will be in in the morning. What you are saying is 200 and 250 shafts are the same, it won't do me much good. I am not sure of the part # pump I have. I had to bend the pickup and hammer on the pan just a little to get my clearance just right but I did not think much of it at the time because my pan was not in the best of shape anyways. Kind of sounds like I have the wrong pump huh? Thanks for the info. Looks like I have some work to do. :?

I just got on www.napaonline.com and saw that the 250 shaft is 4.14", a full inch shorter than the 200s 5.14" shaft. Diffrent part # oil pumps of course for 200/250. The shaft I have is 4.14" but I have never mesed with anything other than 200s. I am all screwed up now!

When you get the new pump, there is a little grip ring that holds the shaft up to keep it from bottoming out before you put the distributor in. If you have access to a real parts store, have them pull out a couple of pump kits and check the shafts. I had to do this and finally got one that worked. I needed the new one because the old one was rounded off on both the top and bottom and wouldn't drive the pump. Keep the old shaft if it is still good.
The Mellings are new castings from Argentina and the numbers for the high volume and stock pumps are close and look very similar.

Got it going!!!!!! It runs again!!! I had a helpfull parts guy at AAP pull out the books and ordered the 5.14" shaft and it was just what I needed! Man I was getting worried I was going to have to take the motor back out. I don't know what the deal is with all the diffrent pumps and drive shafts but the stuff I had was not right. Well, I thought I would let you guys know it is back going again! Thanks for the help.
