I was looking at the old cam to see if I could find any irregularities anywhere, because of the metal shavings I found---one of many posts below. At any rate when I pulled the key dowel for the new cam---I missed this:

I didn't notice one on the Clay Smith cam either---do I need it? Obviously it is a spacer that went between the stock cam end and the retainer...I didn't see a lot of room for this when I installed the CS cam?

You do need a spacer on the cam. It should be a little thicker than the retainer. I don't know if the new cam would have one, they usualy don't.

Yes you do need it or the cam can move around too much. Most cam companies do not supply a new one just like they usually don't supply the dowel pin.

Well, that dumb question probably saved my cam...I was going to take it all apart anyway---I am about a degree off. I took those pics in of the cam bearings to the machinist today---if he says I need new ones I think I will get them installed--if it ain't too steep.
