One ? about lining up timing marks

The JP Performance instructions that come w/ the fspp cs cam says when using the advance timing marks rotate the cam counter clockwise to set up the alignment and for retard to rotate the cam clockwise. Now, when you line up your marks from the cam to the crank---what difference does direction of rotation make? It must be the position of the cam lobes--i.e., whether it is coming up on the lifter at the intake stroke or coming down? I am just curious what difference it makes.

I believe it says to rotate the crank counterclockwise to advance the timing.
That means the valves will open sooner than straight up.
