What kind of business sells this? I don't know where to start looking for it.

I am assuming that they call phenolic "Garolite." Is this correct?

What thickness will I need?

Please confirm that I am looking at is the right stuff:

Well, I emailed them and told them what I wanted and what I planned to do with it.

Their response was "We are unable to recommend an item for your application."

Seem as though they of all people should have a recommendation since they deal with that material all the time!

I made a phenolic spacer out of Grade XX Garolite from McMaster. It has good temp range (which I don't remember exactly) and it's black. It's also one of the cheaper materials. I bought the 1/2" and epoxied two layers to make a 1" ported spacer/adapter for a H/W 5200. I needed the 1" thickness to get clearance for the throttle linkage. If you just need heat insulation 1/2" or 1/4" should be fine. The stuff is really insulating. I tried cutting a hole in it with a hole saw and it got so hot it started smoking. I switched to a large wood bit and went right through it. It also tends to chip out when the drill exits the bottom, so you might try drilling a pilot hole then starting each side of the hole with the right size bit.
