pink wire

I replaced the points on my stock 170 w/petronix, installed a flame thrower coil , advanced my timing a little, regapped the plugs, and I've been left on the road about 12 times. It always restartes or sometimes it continues to run before coming to a complete stop which only bothers me when there's a semi behind me when this decides to happen. Does the pink wire have anything to do with this?

If the pertronix wants full 12V, then yes. But I don't know if Pertronix needs it or not.

I've seen to many people have troubles with Pertronix for me to want to rely on one.

I ran my Pertronix I for many years with the "Pink Wire" in place, and had no problems. It should have nothing to do with the engine running after you shut it off, which is what I think you mean.

Two things will keep you running on. Either you have very hot spots in the combustion chambers, which makes it diesel; or you have a faulty ignition switch.

Pulled the ign. switch out to see where the pink wire was going to and low an behold two wires came off the back of the switch that had spades on them and not sure which goes to which. I put the switch assy back together but not mounted in the dash and it does not start in the start position. do I have to ground it (the switch) to the dash or maybe just switch the wires around

pertronix usually needs 12 volts so remove the resister or taping into the line before will supply the juice that it needs as to run on issue that ain't pertronix,, when you say run on do you mean deseiling?

Well, that sounds like switch to me. We had another guy several months ago who had a similar issue and he fixed it with a new switch. Now dieseling is a whole different issue. BIGREDRASA is right about the hot spots (which can also cause predetonation) but dieseling can also be caused by timing, high idle, running too rich, and several other things. Doesn't sound like you have dieseling though.

That pink resistor will not have any effect on Pertronics as far as running when it's shut off. My petronics worked sorta OK, but nowhere as nice as the DSII conversion works. That pink resistor wire has more to do with coil and/or points than anything else anyway.

Just suck it up my friend, go out and spend some of your beer and cigarette money on a new switch and get it over with (while you're at it, be sure to destroy any "RAP" CDs you might have in order to remove any negative JUJU they might cause) :) . Seriously, leave the switch wires alone and in OEM condition, at least until you can get the car running right. My old switch worked fine, but I replaced it anyhow during the restoration. So many functions are based on that switch that I didn't want to take any chances.

Its probably better that it keeps running rather than stops running as far as that Semi on your butt is concerned  !

Go to your sig and tell us a little more about your ride.

There's a simple way to see it the problem is dieseling. Shut the engine off in gear. If you have a manual, put it into 3rd; butt up against a post or tree; and let out the clutch, gently. It should stop if it's dieseling before you let it out completely. If it keeps running with the clutch all out, you need a new clutch and switch. :(
