Pistons and rings dilema

Well I finally had some time today to remove the pistons from my 200 to get ready for a ring job (it's been a long time coming) but I got to thinking....hmmmm....

I noticed after removing the pistons that there was no ridge to remove at the top of the cylinder bores. This got me wondering. There was also no overbore size stamped on the pistons. And finally two of the connecting journels had been miss matched. The casting numbers on the journel connects (don't know the technical term) for piston 4 and 5 had been mixed up. Meaning someone had done some work before on the engine and didn't pay attention when they put the pistons back in the block.

Not that any of this matters now but like I said it got me thinking.

When I hone the cylinder walls, will this take away enough material to warrant an overbore, say .020? I'm thinking overbored pistons needed to be installed anyway because of how easy I was able to remove them from the block (very SMALL tap with a dowel from the underside) and the fact that someone had taken apart this motor before - for whatever reasons.

Or...can I just put in new rings and forget about ordering larger pistons?

Or...if I have to put in oversized pistons, what involves overboring the cylinder walls?

I know these are a lot of questions but I would really like to get some answers and information before I continue with this project. Thanks in advance for all the help.

what sort of condition are your bores/pistons in ? There are a few ways to check.you will need a bore micrometer . check for bore taper or ovality with the micrometer .Going by my ring supplier in NZ "if honing a worn block ,stock removal should be no more then 0.002" (0.05).If more than this is needed the block is not suitable for re-honing and should be bored to next oversize". Standard bore size for the 200 is 3.6800 . You can measure down the bore about an inch and check for the taper or ovality, then measure again at the bottom of the bore on the unworn section. On the other hand if it looks like its been apart before and has no
ridge i would guess its had a ridge removal and hone in the past.Go for the rebore option with some nice new pistons and rings ,your motor will love you for it.
