problem with new motor....

well I ran the new motor at home and around town to break it in and all seemed fine. so I started on my 270 miles trip to school yesterday. I get about 70 miles and stop to check oil and such and everything was ok (was about a quart low but wasn't filled perfectly anyway) so I leave a walmart banging gears on the t5 with no problem other than the long throw it has right now. about 70 miles down the road I pull off to get some eats and warm up a bit. when I go to pull out from the light my clutch just slips like mad. I park it at a dennys and pop the hood and see oil dripping from teh bell housing (left a pretty good sized puddle too) I eat and get back on teh road and it keep slipping (esp in 3-5) and I limp it the rest of the way. so how bad is this? I am guessing rear main or oilpan because the rest of the motor is clean. I simply put the seal in there wtih no sealer and just a bit of oil on it. shoudl there have been some sealer on something that I missed? how bad is it to replace in car?

btw the t5 was great until this came up

REally sorry to hear about that. Sounds like you're probably gonna have to pull the tranny/clutch again and discontaminate it. As far as the seal is concerned,(assuming it is a neoprene seal and not a rope seal) Do you remember if the lip of the seal was facing towards the front of the engine and also was it staggered in the cap. Also, I do know that you are supposed to put just a dab of sealer on the main cap mating surface half as well as the mating surface of the seal. Hope this helps. Either way, Doesn't sound like fun. Good luck

well it holds good enough to drive on....since I am at school now the car is staying parked until march so I guess I will figure out what to do then. I just read some replys on my breather system post and was wondering if maybe I damaged the seal with a closed system and then it failed after it was ran for a bit? it didn't fail until I started running at a higher speed so maybe I wasn't pulling enough vacuum to keep the crankcase clear? I guess monday I will call a couple shops in town and see what it will run me to have them touch it (only if it includes a warrenty) otherwise I will just mess with it on break. so stagger the seal and some silicon on it?
