proper way to adapt a carb.

What would be the proper and best way to adapt the stock '64 carb. (Autolite 1100?) to a larger 1.75" intake? Fabricating a spacer is no problem at all. I was just wondering if it should be like an upside-down funnel, or no funnel at all (just a plate w/ a 1.5" hole bolted to the larger intake).

What would be the effects (engine performance-wise), if any, of adapting down to this size carb? It doesn't seem like it would matter since the older engines used this small carb, also. Is this the case?

I have the Fairmont carb now, but I really want to get rid of it. I could definitely tell a slight increase in power after I installed it, but I think most of that was because of the crappy adaptor that my so-called "mechanic" installed. It didn't even line up right with the intake, so I know it had some major restrictions. I'm thinking that with the correct adaptor it should run better. Am I right in assuming this?

Yes, a well made, well centered adaptor should work just fine in adapting a 1100 Autolite the a 1.75" carb hole.

Tapering and rounding edges should give a slight advantage in flow as compared to leaving sharp, stepped edge transitions.

While I've never seen CFM ratings on the Holley 1946 model carb, that was used on the Fairmonts, my guess is that it would flow about the same as the 185 CFM on a 1.2" venturi 1100. The #1946 is horribly cluttered in the air way and encumbered with a variety of electronic feed back apparatus. While it is a more sophisticated carb, it is more complicated. Some times simple has its advantages.

The linkage adaptation could be a challenge. Be sure to remove and plug the spark control valve unless you're still using the old Load-a-Matic distributor (heaven forbide).

Since you have both carbs and the opportunity, how about a back to back comparison. Then you can tell us!

Good luck.

That is exactly one of the reasons why I want to get rid of it. It's too hard to adjust and actually KEEP adjusted. It has an electric choke, which I like when it is working right. Somehow, it always has a way of readjusting itself even when the hold down screws are as tight as can be. Plus, I like the look of the stock air cleaner better than the big Fairmont's w/ ports sticking out the side. Plus, I want to go back to the original manual choke. No more stick choke!!!!!! ;)

Yes, I'm still using the Load-o-Matic distributor (w/Pertronix elect. ign.). I've used it all along with the 1946 and have had no problems other than the normal "6 cylinder idle," which I had when I used the 1100, also.

Linkage isn't a problem, either. I, luckily, kept all of it when I converted to the 1946, so it's just a matter of hooking it all back up.

Thanks for the info!

i got the same setup for now ,, a d8 head with the bigg logg , and the old 11oo carb . runs great !!!! and is using 1 ltr gas on 14 km !!
i did use the spacer plate that did come with the d8 head that whas attach on the carb. with some minor spacing for the bolts [did make the hole,s bigger ]
car runs great , smoking tires is no problem , got more problems with driving without smoking the tires,  linkage is no problem to, did all fitt well , my planning is the 3x dubble weber setup for the head , almost ready , but now with the 1/14 gas /km it is fun to drive ,

What kind of carb. are you using? I've never seen one like that before.

The one you just pictured in your last post is a Holley 1946. This is the same type that came on the Fairmonts (and other Fords of this era) with the 1.75" intake. That is the exact same carb. that I have now. I want to adapt to use the 1100. Here's a pic. of a 1100:

This one has an automatic choke, but I want to get one w/ manual choke.
