Any ideas about a recurrent problem I have?

Here is the problem: when it is warm outside (above 80ºF or so) and I restart the car with the engine hot, it stalls as soon as I give it gas.

A local shop, who rebuilt the carb, had a look and determined that the float was set too high because when it stalled you could see gas shooting out of the bowl. So now the float is set to just above fuel starvation level and it works ok, but still stalls sometimes just after restart.

Could the problem be something else other than the float?

Any and all ideas welcome, please!

Thanks,
Scott

New float or old float? Sounds like the float is not functioning properly. Was it "jar" tested prior to installation in the carb? You might want to replace it, regardless.

It's an old float. I think it was checked for leaks, but I'll double check it or replace it.

Any more ideas on what could cause stalling in hot weather?

It got so bad this past summer that it was dangerous to drive. Now I'd like to try just about anything to reduce the problem before summer.

Initially we thought it was vapour lock and insulated the fuel line b/w the fuel pump and carb. That seemed to help, but didn't cure the problem.

I just received the Ford Falcon Performance Handbook (great reading, thanks to all who've suggested it!) and they mention eliminating the coolant flow through the carb base. Could this help me? They only say that is not usually needed, but don't really say why exactly.

Like I said, I'd like to try any suggestion that could help prevent stalling so give me some more ideas, please! You can even just make stuff up for fun, I'm all ears.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

I would say it was your fuel transducer level being too high. If the bythium rod is not inserted properly into the...... Just making stuff up.

Have you checked vaccum? I had a vaccum leak in mine and it caused all sorts of problems. I finally found it by spraying carb cleaner around the carb while the engine was running. When I sprayed the base the car would idle up. I replaced the manifold gasket and all was well.

Everyone's got a slightly unique situation. My experiences of poor running in hot weather (albeit an IHC 345 bent eight) were resolved by the following in approximate order of effectiveness.

•Distributor overhaul/recurve
•Fuel pressure regulator/gauge
•Diaphragm style electric pump
•Phenolic carb spacer - 1" tall

If I had to do it again, the only variation would be to use a return style regulator. Had a Holley Blue electric pump (well, several, actually, in succession - all died). The diaphragm one works nicely - currently a "Facit", but have a Carter waiting for custom bracket. I upsized the lines to Dash-6 spec (about 3/8" internal sizing).

The QJ carb had been overhauled and was reasonably smooth in transitions, so I wasn't starting from the same point as yourself, but hot days really sucked; you knew the motor would let you down somewhere in traffic.

Cheers, Adam.

I had an exhaust leak right above #3/4 so it tended to heat my carb up real bad and cuse vapor lock if it ran in one spot too long. I had a hard time finding a sigle barrell phenolic spacer. Would have tto have a shop make it to costly for me. Also as I amnow putting onheaders I will be isntalling a lghtweight sheet of luminum alongside the log to proetct the intake manifold but mostly the carb from header heat when I get it running.
Call me if you got any questions...I'm out on convalescent leave recovering from a hernia I coughed my self into with Bronchitis in January...so I got time to chat.

It could be lots of things....

PM and I'll send you my phone number.

Thanks Bob, I knew it was the fuel transducer level. I've never been able to even find it!

Thanks guys for the tips. Addo, I don't know if it could be the distributor because it idles fine and runs well, it just stalls after the initial restart. Is the carb spacer just to get the carb further from the exhaust manifold, or are there other benifits?

Steve-o, how will you install the heat shield? I'll send you an e-mail and you can tell me all about it.

Thanks again,
Scott
