radiator/crank clearance

Aloha folks. I'm working on installing a larger radiator w/electric fan into my '63 falcon, and after cutting and banging on the front support, I still only have around 1/4-1/3 inch of clearance between the fan and the crank pulley. Am I right to be worried about this, or is that enough space?

Assuming it's not, any suggestions on getting some more space in there would be appreciated. I was looking into adjustable motor mounts, but it turns out there's no such thing for the sixes that I can find. Would swapping to a single groove balancer be a good idea? That should bump up the clearance to around 1" but will having a lighter balancer cause any trouble on a '66 engine? Should I just bite the bullet and keep on cutting the front support?

This is a driveway project, done with a limited toolbox, so anything requiring specialized tools is out for now.

Thanks in advance for any advice out there.

the single groove balancer would be fine if you don't need a second groove for accessories. would work just fine. just ask yourself wether its a better use of time and cash to swap balancers or to keep cutting. i don't know, it depends in part on how easy it is to find the right balancer and how well equipped you are to keep cutting
its your call, both are good options

Thanks for the reply.

If a single groove will work, then that's the plan. I don't have ready access to a welder, so I'd rather not take off any more of the front support than is absolutely necessary.

Do you think 1" of clearance between the crank pulley and the fan enough? Is there a rule of thumb for how much travel I can expect from the engine under hard braking?

an inch should be enough - it shouldnt ever move more than 1/4" in that direction.
as for clearance between the pully and fan, my truck has just enough space to barely slide a fanbelt between em

Perfect! Thanks guys, I was starting to get worried, but if an inch will work then I should be fine with the thinner damper. Now all I have to do is finish the wiring and figure out the neutral safety and backup lamps, and she'll be on the road. I can't freaking wait!

Thanks again for all your help.
