All Small Six Radiator moved? Radiator/Fan replacement

This relates to all small sixes

So I was just cruising down the road at about 45mph when I felt that my transmission was taking a bit to shift into 3rd gear(I have a green dot tranny). When she finally did shift I’m thinking the transmission and engine shifted slightly forward and one of my fan blades touched the radiator and broke a blade and destroyed my radiator. Now, time to replace my fan setup and radiator. Eventually I will be running a mild turbo so I would like to get a good fan/radiator combo for that but that is still usable now. Please send me any recommendations. Electric? Push/pull fans? Aluminum radiators?

Additionally, do you think my motor mounts need to be changed? What could make that happen? When the car is parked there is about 1/2” of space between the blades and the radiator. Motor mount picture included.

If the engine and transmission shifted forward (they're attached to each other so they have to move together) your transmission mount could be shot - or the bolts holding it to the crossmember could be missing. Also confirm that the perches that attach to the frame (they are the part under the engine mount rubber isolator) are secure and that the nuts that attach the engine mount isolator to the perch are tight.

EDIT: Just saw the second part of your question - Virginia Mustang sells the 6-blade fan for the I6. They also have a good selection of aluminum radiators for the I6 cars. I bought one for my 250 conversion (66 Mustang) and it's working extremely well.

I am thinking that the fan blade broke first and then caused the damage but of course check motor, trans mounts and water pump. I do not believe that the ground cables should be connected to the motor mount bolt, the motor mount bolts should be tight without soft cable eyes there.

X2 I agree with drag-200stang on that would not be the ideal way to be hooking up you Ground Cables. Best of luck

It looks like the spacer may be wrong since it put the fan so close to the radiator. Someone may have done this to combat an overheating problem?
Of course, all the engine and transmission mountings should be inspected.

HELP!

Today I went to a local Mustang shop and purchased a new MaxCore Aluminum radiator, mechanical fan and 1/2" fan spacer. When I got home I tried to install everything and the radiator is too thick, I don't have enough room to install the fan and spacer. The MaxCore radiator had a core thickness of 2-13/16" and the stock one has a thickness of 1-3/4". All the radiators that I have found that i believe would give me the clearance that I need are for V8 conversions which means the inlet/outlet diameters are incorrect for my use.

All of this and I believe my only options are the following:

1. Convert to an electrical fan now. (Not in the budget right now)
2. Install a radiator for a V8 conversion and have custom hoses made. But I don't know anywhere that makes customs hoses.
3. Wait for the Champion Radiator to come back into stock but after speaking with them, there is not a foreseeable restock date on the horizon.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!

Thank you in advance for any help/recommendations.

As I mentioned in post 3, Virginia Classic Mustang sells the 6-blade fan for the I6. They also have a couple of aluminum radiators for the I6 cars (3-row and 2-row). I bought a 3-row for my 250 conversion (66 Mustang) and it's working extremely well.

As far as the spacer is concerned, put the radiator in, put the water pump pulley and fan (with no spacer) on the water pump spindle, and measure the distance between the fan and the radiator to find out whether you need a spacer and how big it needs to be. Most auto parts stores (O'Reilly, Autozone, etc.) sell fan spacers.

The Derale 19115 15" 6 blade fan has all the pitch to the rear. I installed one this week. I gained 1/2" fan to radiator clearance. I like it because i can remove and reinstall it without removing the radiator.
