Re-installing engine question

Howdy all, this is a newbie question. I finally got to the fun of putting the engine(200) back into my 65 Mustang. Now this is my first time ever taking it out and putting back in. So all did not go smoothe when attempting to put back in. I was trying to line up the trany and rear plates on the engine but it seemed as the engine kicked off to one side and would not attach to the trany on one side. I could not move the engine side to side to make adjuatments due to the motor mounts. Is it customary to remove the engine mounts to re-install the engine?

Thanks

Nazs

It can be dificult to line everything back up. It just takes a little patience. I had the mounts on my engine when I put it back in. I had to spin the crank some to line of the torque converter, had to pull it out and reposition the chain on the cherry picker to get engine at a better angle etc. Took a little coaxing, but eventually got it. Keep trying, and it wil happen.

8) every engine i have installed always took some coaxing to get in. sometimes twisting the engine works, other times turning the driveshaft.

IIRC, when I re-installed the engine, we had similar problems but we ended up removing the engine mounts completely until the engine and tranny were in and together. We left the engine attached to the cherry picker and eventually we were able to get everything back in.

It can be more difficult with new mounts since they haven't compressed as much yet.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I will remove both engine mounts and try again.

Nazs, I've pulled the engine in my '66 several times, and just yank it and the trans at the same time. Saves a LOT of hassle! :D

That is what i plan on doing if i yank it out again. My pops told me to do that and i kinda laughed at him for saying that cause i figured that was just more work to do. Bigtime rookie mistake i think.

Thanks

oh boy, i just can't wait to put my engine back in... maybe i should have pulled the tranni like i first thought...

Andrew, it's not too late. Just ease the trans down onto the ground and slide it forward into the engine bay. You can then pick it up with your cherry picker and mate it up to the engine at your leasure, then slide them both in the hole as a unit. Be sure to loosen one side of the trans crossmember and disconnect the other and pivot it out of the way before trying to reinsert the engine/trans.

Oh yeah, and don't worry guys, the rest of us learned the hard way too...

Another lesson...

if you decide to pull the tranny and mount it to the engine then drop them in as an assembly make sure to get a decent engine leveller before you do that...

I pulled the engine and tranny as a unit and used an engine leveller I bought from a local Auto parts store... worked great...

Not sure how I would have angled that assembly down in without it....
you will need that to get the tranny end down and into the tunnel without banging anything... then once the assembly is tail down in the tunnel you can slowly level her out and install the mounts and crossmember. Good luck... was not that hard, just takes some patience.

GET ONE.... They are not that expensive.

This is almost too good to be true! I am getting ready to pull my engine this weekend. However I have never done this before and am wondering what some good steps and experience can tell me... or if you would like I can start another topic. Thanks!

Well i decided to try one more time with the trany still in place. I also took out the motor mounts. Now i thought maybe i solved my problem of lining up the trany to rear of engine because i could now move the engine side to side with the mounts out. Things did not go good at all. Yes i could move side to side but that does not seem to be the problem. I am gonna describe a few parts cause i do not know the names so i hope you all understand what i am saying.

On the rear of the engine there are two metal plates. The onein the front is small and round and the other one behind it is a wierd shape and kinda flimsy. Then there is the torc conveter in the trany. It has these bolts that go through that go through the front round plate on the rear engine. Then the nuts go on those bolts. But it seems like the bolts are hitting the second flimsy plate preventing the engine and trany to come together. I could get the bolts in that connect the trany and engine and tried to tighten them to bring them together but it was very hard to turn them. Am i just not lining the torc converter bolts up correctly? They all fit into the holes so i can't see any other way to do it. Please i need some more advice before the neighbors call the cops on a yelling maniac .

Thanks

Nazs

OK....

First the flimsy plate is the Block Plate and should be closest to the block. It prevents matter from entering the engine and has other uses I am sure...
The next in the chain is the flywheel that is the toothed wheel that engages the starter and attaches to the Torque Converter....

Now I am not 100% sure on this... but can you run the bolts the other way? Heads towards the blockplate, and nuts to the rear? I wish I had my parts here I would look for you... but the mouting studs should definitly not hit the blockplate...

Someone else can help out more I am sure....

I know how frustrating it can be though... I share your pain.

8) it sounds like the torque converter is not in all the way. there should be about 3/4" clearance between the flexplate and the converter when the engine and tranny are together, but the converter has not yet been bolted to the flexplate.

The two plates you mentioned, one is the flex plate and the other is a water/dust shield. You should remove the shield before trying to install the motor. Once you get the motor and trans mated together, don't tighten them down yet. Now is the time for you to re-insert the sheilds (upper and lower). I just installed my motor last monday. It took me 3 hours to remove the motor, because I wanted to label and take pictures of everything, so I could put it all back together easier. It took my 10 yr old son and I 1 hr and 45 min to get it back in. I have to admit, once I got the motor lined up, I had to give it a few sakes to get everything seated properly. Also, you can attach the flex plate to the torque converter with the sheilds already installed, just use a box end wrench.

It may take some time, but it is do-able. I am a mechanic in the Air Force, never have we pulled both the trans and engine just to work on the engine. But that's just the military's way of doing things.
Good luck!
